Once upon a time there was a routine at the end of the CD installation that prompted the user to remove the CD by ejecting it. Check if it is available. I remember that sHy had once implemented it but didn't keep in the latest releases.

I would suggest adding volumeicon to the system tray. It makes adjusting the volume 100 times easier.

Perhaps disable hal? I disabled it, the system is now much lighter.
Hal isn't much needed.
The only problem oblogout needs hal to shutdown and reboot but I fixed it.
I removed oblogout and use the Zenity shutdown,reboot,logout script.

my suggestion is to add bleachbit to the apps section, it deletes unneeded files to free disk space and maintain privacy.

Only thing to configure is define the languages one wants to keep, after that the tool can delete all other languages support on your system and frees significant disk space.
When using chromium or firefox, the cache of the browsers is filling rapidly using much diskspace, which can also be deleted by bleachbit as well as the system cache and many other unneeded cached files, if the user chooses them.

Because ArchBang is a lightwight distribution and is therefore likely to be installed on machines with older hardware and or lower hardware environments such as low RAM and or low diskspace,
i think bleachbit would be a good addition.

Will the best and kewlest developer in the whole wide world.... how about freearch instead of file-roller.
It's awesome I swear.. the way way it handles p7zips and all the obscure compression types... I love it... whaddaye think?

I'm currently using lfpower for logout which doesn't appear to require HAL;

Seems like it's meant only for laptops though.

I'd like to second ki3rk3gaard's motion to move away from file-roller. It appears that file-roller drags in an otherwise unnecessary nautilus dependency. Any number of different lightweight file managers could be used; I'm currently using Xarchiver, though the similarly named Xarchive would also work.

Hi to everyone, I'm new to this forum, I'm an Arch user like 3 months for now. My first option when I looked in the wiki was OpenBox. 3 days ago I found ArchBang, so I'm really excited to find out that, there is a community to Arch+OpenBox.

2 things:
First,isn't hal already deprecated and instead using udev? Udev

Second, for logout, restart, hibernation purposes, why don't implement obshutdown? It's really customizable (You can configure it, to use whatever you want for logout, restar, etc). Here is a snapshot:

This new version is more better then previous, i have few suggestions...

1.) Shourcut for sflock (super + l)
2.) On volume icon i noticed when i right click it cannot open Open mixer
3.) Artwork is fine, but there are alot better mouse theme i would love to see some better mouse theme....

Wouldn't Firefox Aurora be a better choice? It is also updated nightly with everything that works, but it takes some measures so that you don't end up with a completely nonfunctional browser.

3. Since you are using urxvt now there is a nice script made by Xyne that allows the user to paste selection with ctrl+v instead of middle click only.
It is called urxvt-clipboard and requires the entry URxvt.perl-ext-common: default,clipboard in .Xdefaults
4. Please add the resume hook to mkinitcpio.conf by default as it avoids problems with resuming from suspension and hibernation.
5. As mentioned earlier perl-file-mimeinfo solves many problems with filetypes. Please add that as well to the next release.
5. This package is not needed. Add export 'DE=xfce' and 'export BROWSER=browser' before the exec command in .xinitrc.
6. Personally I think providing keybindings for multimedia keys by default is a win win situation. The one who does not have them does not care, the one who has them can use them directly as they are usually mapped with XF86*.

Yes it can. Add export GTK2_RC_FILES="$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0" before the exec command in .xinitrc.
9. What about having a commented entry for the multilib repo in pacman.conf? This way it can be easily uncommented when needed.
10. Crunchbang has a nice menu entry called 'Recent files' which is pretty useful. You may think of adding this as well.

We had PCManFM a long time ago back in Apeiro and went back to Thunar just because of personal preferences but these days, I want to optimize the size of AB so this would be a good move for 2011.11

I disagree with going back to pcmanfm. Thunar is a much better file manager imo. The addition of samba support in Thunar is huge for a lot of people. They can now browse windows shares with gvfs-smb installed. I think this should be added to the default list of packages.

This is turning into one of those which is best threads, whatever file manager makes no difference. If a user wants to change once installed then its down to them. Even running live provided you have a working network connection you can install what you need. Last resort create your own custom Archbang from guides in Wiki & shipped DOC

Hello Willxtreme it would be good to remove oblogout, it's not needed anymore because now you can shutdown your pc using consolekit.
See the Arch wiki it works much better, it works without editing the sudoers list.

I use brighter coloured icon themes to offset the dark themes that I like. I'm not a fan of dark icon sets.

Well the light themes are much brighter,they indeed hurt the eyes. With the dark themes I don't have this problem, I can sit hours on the pc
without burning my eyes. Btw I can't find a nice looking light themes they seem very window95 except for ambiance theme is very nice.

Archbang 2011.10 is quite nice. I've migrated over from Crunchbang as Statler doesn't seem to run the later Firefox releases as well as it perhaps could if it had newer components version like GCC. That's just a guess as I'm just an end user who doesn't know much about these things.

Out of all the "light" Linux distros I've tried over the past year this definately has the least quirks and best OOB experience so far. It's the first time my USB sound just works, ie without any tweaks needed.

If it weren't for the text installer which can be daunting I'd say AB is far more beginner friendly than Linux Mint LXDE, Peppermint Two, and Crunchbang.

The few issues I had during install were:

1) Partitioning the unallocated space on my drive as I had an existing Windows installation. I had no idea so I exited and used GParted to do that.

2) Not an issue but when the option to create a swap appears it would have be helpful to suggest a swap size or indicate it's optional.

3) I had no idea what "Do you want to mount other static partitions at bootup?" was. Is it for multi-booting other OSes?

The only tweaks I've had to do so far is edit a couple of files to enable autologin and multi-boot. Installing regular Firefox (So I can use my favourite add-ons) and Samsung ML-1665 printer drivers from the AUR are on my to do list.

It would be nice if the Faenza icons, CPU frequency scaling, and BURG could be preinstalled in future releases.

Do you want to mount other static partitions at bootup?

Say you have a backup of storage partition you want to mount each time you boot up, this creates a mounting point and the automatic mounting.

A minor polishing issue, regrading 2011.10 :

Near the end of a default install, the terminal simply says:
"...Now finishing copying files :D ... " ?

However, I noticed that it sometimes takes awhile, and with nothing else displaying activity on the terminal/screen, a user might think it's all done. (like I did wrongfully).
Maybe you could add a rotating vertical-scroll-bar ?, or scrolling "#" signs, atleast just to show some activity ?, or the percentage left to actually copy ?, and also a "Done" (only when it is really done), or reboot now, or whatever.

Hello everyone, I would like to have the ability to continue installation via CLI, wirelessly. Currently we or maybe just I, myself cannot connect wirelessly in command mode only. I have used Arch for many years and other distros. I remember being able to connect to a wireless network prior to installing x in Arch a few years ago and download what I needed, but now, without ifconfig and such, it seems impossible. I tried with the instructions that Will has on his page but to no avail.
An other suggestion would be to include a Network Topic in the forum.
I do enjoy a great distro and ArchBang is a great distro in the making. Bravo a toi Will...

In connection with my bug-report I'd like to suggest gnome-themes-standard, (perhaps) gtk-engine-unico and a nice theme with both GTK2 & 3 variants to be included as a new default (until Shiki-Statler goes GTK3).

the file /etc/sudoers.d/g_wheel leaves the system wide open as it requires no password for anyone. i think if it was simply modified this way:

%wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL
%power ALL= NOPASSWD: /sbin/shutdown
%power ALL= NOPASSWD: /sbin/reboot

it would allow users to still shutdown and reboot the system with no password(thus allowing the exit menu to still work) but still requiring a password for everything else.

maybe rename the g_wheel file or create a g_power with the 2 last lines.

I have seen this debate in other forums (most recently PC-BSD). A lot of the debate comes down to who gets put into the wheels group, if they are put in there then they would have approval for admin items without the need for putting in the password, what about some items that want to run as root, if you do add someone to wheels and then give them the password are you really gaining anything, etc.

I think the best solution is a good wiki on the choices and how to set them up. Unfortunately I am not the one to write the wiki as this is the first that I came across how to set up the sudoers permissions (which I am writing down so I can remember). Does someone know a good link for more on this subject? Or can I inspire someone with the knowledge to submit a tutorial?

You are right. upstart, lightdm seems a bit complicated. Actually, I was bit disappointed by the plain image of Slim, but after I configured with different theme, Slim looks cool. Will check systemd with the current system and report back.

I think we should still leave a plain "text" copy of the "DOC" in ~/ , which is already in Super+r -> /usr/share/ab/DOC.html, would be a handy thing.
Just in case ppl run into startx/X problems, and/or can't bring up Super+r for whatever reasons.

Inetutils seems a little bit strange to me... It combines useful stuff like ftp and hostname with obsolete and unsafe rlogin, rcp, etc.
For example, on debian issuing rlogin calls ssh in fact which seems to be quite reasonable to me.

I don't know about btrfs (I saw very different opinions in the web - probably it's a little bit early to include it) but I think jfs fits well in such lightweight environment. Now there is a bug - I could not install AB on jfs without some shaman dancing...

I also would like to see reacher and more integrated DE. It doesn't mean switching to xfce or something, but just adding some additional stuff seamlessly. To me, some useful functions are missing. Personally I miss smb/nfs clients built into a FM and desktop icons.

Xarchiever has a bug with long Cyrillic file (or, more probably, directory) names. Had to switch to file roller so far.

Xcompmgr appears to be a buggy stuff. It crashed on my laptop from time to time and I replaced it with cairo-compmgr, that seems to be a better choice.

Feh is able to replace both nitrogen and geeqie and good enough to be voted for.

I also think than AB will quickly gain popularity as a laptop OS due to its lightness and effectiveness. I've spent a lot of time setting up all this acpi/power/laptop mode stuff and would be glad to find some pre-configured packages available.

Besides this, I think the distro is really good, and still have a potential to improve much further. Thanks for your work!

Humans did all innovations to make life easier. Arch is much easier when you decide to get your hands dirty.
Archbang is another great innovation to make virtual life a little more easier.

But still there is packages that I do not use are left in the system. I do not much care about them until they bite
me. Some packages are,
DeadBeef - (I prefer) XMMS2
Gnome Mplayer - I use only VLC.
OpenBox and related customization tools - I like Xfce.
Office Zathura - I never opened that one.
Archbang is like a capsule extracted from ArchLinux, isn't it?

I always liked the idea about building a system from base, but where arch linux is time consuming and
archbang is quiet a complete distro, it also left me some packages that i never wanted to use.

Where i am getting is, why dont Archbang let the user decide which packages the user want to use in there
system instead of figuring about which package should be included in the distribution?
I think, this way is more closer to..
1 Simple
2 Elegant
3 Versatile
4 Expedient

Let me explain a little more.
On the archbang live cd the user get prompt for the default set of applications that are already included in the Archbang livecd.
(like, some default application i mentioned above.) Besides on that prompt the user is given a categorized list
for Gnome, Xfce, LXDE, where if the user did not choose one then install the default Openbox. The list can be
expanded in to whatever categories that makes sense (Like Multimeda, Education and so on..) . As i mentioned
above a simple categorization (innovation?) could make life a lot more easier.

I am also aware that we could make an arch linux iso with our own selected packages.
Still but top on that this method could be more convenient.

Please do not tell me to do this myself if i want things like that. I cant do this because of 2 reasons.
1. Am not a developer as a profession or passion.
2. Am not very rich to pay some one to create an another distribution.

Take it only as a suggestion.

AB is not a extraction: it is the Arch base with a certain simple ready-to-go configuration.

Also gtk3 theme is a must have, most applications are moved to gtk3 now (in my case Transmission, it's the most popular gtk3 app for me)

No, don't add anything, i don't like even things that already provided in addition to openbox, because i prefer Xfce. (If i don't forget, crunchbang provided xfce version long time ago, but now it's gone ) If you make the distro openbox centric, it will be much harder to delete all elements and deps of what you've installed. (at now it's batty, tint2, volumeicon, nitrogen, openbox, dmenu-xft, conky and some of their dependicies) - pretty huge list for KISS distro. There also many trash packages in archbang, right now i'm checking /var/lib/pacman/local for installed packages, which from them is useful and which is not.

If you want all in one featured distro - install ubuntu and enjoy ._.

Also please exclude scrot, xorg-utils and xorg-server-utils, they are useless for most users IMO
