Stuck at login

Hey folks, I'm having trouble getting archbang to boot into the desktop from a USB image.
I need to use the nomodeset parameter when attempting to start up a live session, otherwise I get a black screen after the kernel starts. If I use nomodeset however, X does not start and I get a basic login screen with no GUI. I have a GTX 970.

Any ideas? Thanks for reading.

Edit: I tried Manjaro-OpenRC and had the same issue: black screen. I will try another OpenRC non-Arch distribution and report back.
Edit: I tried Star Linux (Devuan) and I had to use nomodeset, but it booted into the desktop without issues.

Re: Stuck at login

Use nomodeset then at login enter ablive (no password), have a feeling it will simply try to start X...

Plan B!

At login enter root (no password) then edit /home/ablive/.bash_profile

#if [[ -z $DISPLAY && ! -e /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 ]]; then
#   exec xinit -- /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp vt7
#fi

Comment out lines as above save and exit root login, then login again as ablive you should be able to then start xorg manually

$ startx

At least then you will get more information on issue (thinking its the xorg drivers not loading)

Re: Stuck at login

Plan A & B failed. Starting X manually gave me the no screens found error. Taking a look at the log, nv and vesa both failed to load, so it's indeed the drivers.

Re: Stuck at login

Oh man I cannot remember the fix, try removing nv and vesa via pacman..... think this issue was something I had under virtual box too

Re: Stuck at login

This is elementary, but I get the target not found error for both packages. I ran -Syyu and pacman works fine for everything else. Thank you for your help so far.

Re: Stuck at login

Might have found the problem, I removed vesa driver as installs were not running correctly. You will have more luck if you set up mirrors then install the following

sudo pacman -Syyu xf86-video-vesa

Assuming a working network connection system should update then install driver and X will appear.

Will get an updated iso uploaded asap wink
