ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

I am going to start work again on an OpenRC release of ArchBang. Why? well I think now that i686 is going to be dropped by Archlinux it maybe possible to have free time to build a systemd free version.

Had in the past used a VM to create OpenRC version but that was slow and difficult to test and upload so my plan is to set aside some hard drive space for a real install (and then remove systemd).

My thoughts are that I can install any desktop, window manager, editor (vi or nano) or anything else I chose... so why not an different init system?

Will state as I have in the past that I am not against systemd (use it daily) it is supplied free of charge (and am grateful for all the hard work of Archlinux devs....) so I cannot really complain. They would argue 'if you do not like it use something else!' which again is true.

Anyway stay tuned for some 'beta' systemd free action ;-)

Yes, the best thing to do is to make it available and see how well it is received...

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

Tomorrow night I will upload if I can, still very much beta. Installer will need work, but for now testing live would really help.

Thank you very much for providing "archbang-openrc-beta-190417-x86_64.iso".

At first sight : nice piece of work! Congratulations.

Did some browsing and compiling. Everything is working. Was surprised no 'utf-8' in lxterminal also after updating .bashrc in that way... (Am writing now from within archbang-openrc-beta-190417-x86_64 using the chromium browser)

Once again : thank you very much.

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

Downloaded and installed to Usb the openrc iso tonight, booted and working fine for me, internet is working,  apps working. Snappy boot time for a live usb system on my machine too. I think i will do a bare metal install for this one. Cheers.

edit, forgot to mention the desktop wallpaper is a nice choice, do you know where that is? Conky looks good too.

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

@seventh I do know where it is. I took the photo in Wales (UK) on mount snowden... would certainly wait until I update installer still needs work!!

At some point will add tips for improving boot time, namely removing unwanted services and a minor change in rc.conf.

Need to get a ToDo list started really want to change look and theme, would also like to reduce iso size.

Am very tempted to switch ArchBang to OpenRC only but will wait and see what responses we get.

Thank you for reaction.

Assign the LANG and LANGUAGE variables to "en_US.utf-8" in '.bashrc'. Then logout and login again.

The only thing I didn't test is the installer. All the rest works as expected  so far.

If you allow me : I would like the other partitions to appear in pcmanfm so that I can mount them through pcmanfm if I like. Now I have to write eg. : "sudo mkdir /mnt/sdb5; sudo mount -t auto /dev/sdb5 /mnt/sdb5"

I agree about the desktop wallpaper : nice!

Thank you.

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

Fast-install may work, however I did try current installer and it failed. Have added normal abinstall but it will need work to make it Openrc friendly. Automounting thought was ok, again something I will look at...

Might seem odd for an arch based distro but Gentoo wiki is a good resource for Openrc

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Localization/Guide

Take a look in /etc/env.d/02locale wink

Had a look. Very nice for info but then Gentoo is too much different. No "env-update" nor <Ctrl+Alt+Backspace> available in Archbang OpenRC. Any way I can simulate them?

More hints?

Thanking you,

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

Of course, editing the file manually is possible as well to diversify the locale variables.
FILE /etc/env.d/02localeSetting the default system locale in /etc/env.d/02locale

LANG="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="C"

It's also possible, and pretty common especially in a more traditional UNIX environment, to leave the global settings unchanged, i.e. in the C locale. Users can still specify their preferred locale in their own shell RC file:

Simply put, you look at OpenRC section and then read what files need editing... commands that are shown are mostly of course related to Gentoo to make changes easier. It is a good source of information which you will not find on Arch wiki.

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

Am working my way through installer and should have figured most of issues [x keyboard needs work]. Something I am going to do is switch to Netsurf browser... this should give you an idea why

firefox 119.94 MiB (179.41 MiB)
Exclusive dependencies: 59.47 MiB
Shared dependencies: 523.03 MiB
Total dependencies: 582.50 MiB (702.44 MiB)

community/netsurf 4.36 MiB ( 7.44 MiB)
Exclusive dependencies: 3.08 MiB
Shared dependencies: 357.82 MiB
Total dependencies: 360.90 MiB (365.26 MiB)

A user post-install can install whatever browser they wish...

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

archbang-openrc-beta.png

Now running 'rc' release, features Netsurf for web browser. Installer is now 90% functional [exception being uefi and syslinux issue].

To run under virtualbox post install you do need virtualbox-guest-utils-openrc, select virtualbox-guest-modules-arch from groups options.

Log in as normal user then:

Edit /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist with your nearest servers

sudo nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Run

sudo pacman -Syyu

to update
Install

sudo pacman -S virtualbox-guest-utils-openrc

[select arch modules options 2]
Add vboxservice

sudo rc-update add vboxservice

Then

sudo reboot

Enjoy

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

Working on bare metal now, figured out my problem with UUID errors. Still not sure why i was seeing an unrecognised UUID but as i multiboot i left out the bootloader and just installed archbang openrc to sda4, then os-prober and update grub from main linux os archlabs on sda1, still no luck, so chroot into archbang and grub install and update from there, again no luck on reboot, back to archlabs on sda1 and update grub and that worked. Now having issues with Veracrypt not finding the file manager in archbang, any ideas on that?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VeraCrypt

Ill figure it out.

Actually using GPG is much easier so will stick with that from now on.

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

VeraCrypt is some continuazation of TrueCrypt, which was awesome for windows and un-locking in Linux. But for your linux instances, why not using LUKS and if you need to encrypt everything in combination with LVM?

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

Re : archbang-openrc-rc-090517.iso.

Thank you again. Nice piece of work! Very nice indeed.

But this time I was not able to solve the lxterminal problem. Setting the LANG and LANGUAGE variables to "en_US.UTF-8" didn't have any effect. All accented letters appear as two chars in lxterminal. Eg. "Déjà c'est l'été." --> "D  j   c'est l'  t  ." There are two rectangular boxes (appearing) as an '0' with an '?' inside to represent the accented chars.

Anything to do with OpenRC?

Thank you for any help.

Re: ArchBang OpenRC release project updates...

Sounds more like a font issue? possibly try a different full font.... When you say anything to do with OpenRC does lxterminal as you wish with systemd?
