Interesting that @poettering uses the "I don't want extraneous functionality in journald" argument whereas everywhere else extra functionality is being absorbed into systemd on the ground that it makes sense. As others have said this is all political and when eventually the kernel is borged into systemd we'll be back with a monolithic opaque system with systemd priests to tell us how lucky we are.
