Void Linux with runit and own package manager

I find this an interesting distro: http://www.voidlinux.eu/

Apparently is an hybryd between Archlinux and gentoo, rolling release, packages are compiled from source (or binaries can be downloaded), pkgsrc (void linux's ebuild) resemble strongly archlinux PKGBUILDs but have some features inspired by gentoo ebuild without the bloat.

Wiki: https://github.com/voidlinux/documentation/wiki
On Google+ https://plus.google.com/communities/113 … 7973059533
Search void packages: http://www.voidlinux.eu/#findpkg
Package Requests: https://github.com/voidlinux/void-packages/issues

XBPS source packages Manual: https://github.com/voidlinux/void-packa … /Manual.md

Build your own iso: https://github.com/voidlinux/void-mklive
Nice video of Francois installing Voidlinux 0.4 wih XFCE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00u7vV_4Mfg#t=348

Have made an installation instruction: http://stillstup.blogspot.nl/2014/09/in … enbox.html

Developer Juan explains the differences between pacman and xbps"

Differences:

- XBPS code is totally written by me, the exception are some parts from NetBSD and OpenBSD; any code is 2 or 3 clause BSD. No GPL code involved.

- XBPS contains a lot more of pkg metadata than pacman, locally and in the repository index: required shared libraries, provided shared libraries, dependencies, build date, sha256 hash of the binary package, etc.

-XBPS has fewer dependencies than pacman: just needs zlib, openssl and libarchive. Compare this to pacman, where they need curl and gpgme that depends on more external libraries.

- XBPS has supported SHA256 hashes for binary packages and pkg files for years! pacman recently added mtree support.

- XBPS uses RSA signatures to verify binary

Technically there are not many differences between them, but I want to state clearly that both are system package managers, they don't allow multiple versions of a pkg installed, unless the files don't conflict. This is also true for dpkg, rpm, and others. Nix is not on this category.

Now xbps-src/xbps-packages:

-  xbps-src and xbps-packages have been written from scratch by me, this is not a PKGBUILD conversion. Check the commit logs to see what I'm talking about. And I've lost 5 years of my life on it, 95% completely alone.

- xbps-src has supported sub packages for years, long before makepkg had support...

- xbps-src supports cross compilation for multiple targets. makepkg can't.

- xbps-src builds pkgs in linux containers BY DEFAULT.

- xbps-src supports build options.

- xbps-src allows you to build your own distribution FROM SCRATCH, NO ADDITIONAL BINARY PACKAGES INVOLVED IN THIS PROCESS.

After installing it successfully in virtualbox and rebooting, network was inapproachable. found in the wiki:

Dynamic IP (DHCP)

This is handled by the dhcpcd package and its service. To acquire a lease for any known interface simply enable the dhcpcd system service:

# ln -s /etc/sv/dhcpcd /var/service/

After making this link network became active.

Nice find.  I'm looking forward to trying this out soon.  I often wish Arch had some of Gentoos features (and customizepkg doesn't cut it for me)

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

After having it installed in VB I find it amazingly effective. I think you could make a VoidBang version of it. The 64 bits version iso is 180 mb. and  it uses very little ram; 88 mb showing with htop.

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

Missed that. Thanks. That seems quite simple, but I suppose there is more to it.
BTW the devoper Juan is not the first kid on the block; he has  developed mklivecd a set of scripts for Netbsd. This is only part of many. many more dev work for Netbsd going  back in 2006.
Although he is not alone in VoidLinux  from what I can see he has done a hell of job in this project. One of the unknown heroes of free computing.

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

Might be worth moving topic to systemd free sub forum. So far managed to do a quick install under Virtualbox added openbox plus xorg. If we generate enough interest then possibly create a basic iso...

Think most of our packages will install only one I found missing was obmenu-generator but guess you could build it. Our tint2 config did not work (not sure why yet)

When I get time I will feed Void wink with our packages and configs fully

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

I have found a lot more packages missing like gthumb, obkey, clipit (only found xclip).
But for the rest it is very smooth and fast.

Have some problems with it though:

I have a problem with spacefm. There seems a bug with the gtk2 version of it: error message: Attempt to unlock mutex that was not locked. Aborted.
See: http://vsido.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=39 … 33#msg9433
I also have a related error that I can log out but not shutdown, which is mentioned on the same page.

I had trouble with spacefm but that has been patced and works great with udevil; don't forget to put "devmon &" in .config/openbox/autostart

I have a tint config that works

Voidbang- that would be really hip now that Arch is so mainstream ;-)

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

Hip is not so much where I am interested in; more in that it is being damn fast and light and with runit.
I think and hope this project has the spirit of Arch when it started and I would like to support that with lots of people flocking to it.
I like to think of myself as having a pretty good nose for quality and I see lots of it here.

Have made an installation instruction: http://stillstup.blogspot.nl/2014/09/in … enbox.html

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

@pablocal: Don't get me wrong, i had Void installed and found it really amazing. But there were too many packages missing and it was just so much work to install (friggin' installer didn't work) that i didn't get back to it. If there was some fine live version of Void, i would surely give it another try.

Yes that is the biggest drawback atm. If htere are some packages that are really a dealbreaker for you , you can file a package request here: https://github.com/voidlinux/void-packages/issues

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

I have been trying to do this, but got stuck. What do Ii do when a packages like clipit is not provided in the xbps-packages/srcpkgs directory.?
I understand you make a folder clipit with a template in it. But then...
I looked at the the abiword template and you see a pkgbuild like script, but more complicated.
I manage to make a pkgbuild but this seems to me like a shot in the dark.

configure_args="--enable-plugins --enable-clipart --enable-templates"
hostmakedepends="automake libtool flex pkg-config"
makedepends="libjpeg-turbo-devel libpng-devel>=1.6 fribidi-devel libgsf-devel
 enchant-devel gtk+3-devel librsvg-devel wv-devel>=1.2.9 boost-devel libxslt-devel
 libwmf-devel libchamplain-devel>=0.12.7_2 redland-devel libical-devel"
depends="hicolor-icon-theme desktop-file-utils"
short_desc="Free word processing program similar to Microsoft(R) Word"
maintainer="Juan RP <xtraeme@gmail.com>"
license="GPL-3"
homepage="http://www.abisource.com/"
distfiles="${homepage}/downloads/${pkgname}/${version}/source/${pkgname}-${version}.tar.gz"
checksum=d17e318c00ff4eb353e0e7994b098b1d4f9ddd8712ac0261a0e38b89081fac01

libabiword_package() {
	short_desc+=" - Runtime library"
	pkg_install() {
		vmove "usr/lib/*.so*"
	}
}

abiword-devel_package() {
	depends="fribidi-devel libgsf-devel wv-devel enchant-devel gtk-devel
		librsvg-devel libabiword>=${version}_${revision}"
	short_desc+=" - development files"
	pkg_install() {
		vmove usr/include
		vmove usr/lib/pkgconfig
	}
}

How the hell do you find out what you have to put in the diverse variables? Could you help me on that?

Another example:

build_style=gnu-configure
configure_args="--enable-compile-in-filters"
hostmakedepends="perl"
makedepends="ncurses-devel"
depends="perl"
short_desc="Spell checker with good multi-language support"
homepage="http://aspell.net/"
license="LGPL-2.1"
maintainer="Juan RP <xtraeme@gmail.com>"
distfiles="${GNU_SITE}/${pkgname}/${pkgname}-${version}.tar.gz"
checksum=f52583a83a63633701c5f71db3dc40aab87b7f76b29723aeb27941eff42df6e1

if [ "$CROSS_BUILD" ]; then
	hostmakedepends+=" automake libtool gettext-devel"
	pre_configure() {
		sed -e 's,AM_CONFIG_HEADER,AC_CONFIG_HEADERS,g' -i configure.ac
		autoreconf -fi
	}
fi

aspell-devel_package() {
	depends="ncurses-devel libstdc++-devel aspell>=${version}_${revision}"
	short_desc+=" - development files"
	pkg_install() {
		vmove usr/include
		vmove usr/bin/pspell-config
		vmove usr/share/info
		vmove usr/share/man/man1/pspell-config.1
		vmove "usr/lib/*.so"
	}
}

It has many essential differences with the first one...
Can you give a template of a application that you managed to build successfully?

The recent package updates has clipit-1.4.2 so there may be no need to create one from source.

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

Yes, I did but I find it difficult to get it right: see my post 16
For example the clipit template that is done reads"

# Template file for 'clipit'
pkgname=clipit
version=1.4.2
revision=2
build_style=gnu-configure
hostmakedepends="intltool pkg-config"
makedepends="gtk+-devel librsvg-devel"
short_desc="Lightweight GTK+ clipboard manager"
maintainer="Enno Boland <eb@s01.de>"
license="GPL-3"
homepage="http://sourceforge.net/projects/gtkclipit/"
distfiles="$SOURCEFORGE_SITE/gtkclipit/Version%201/${pkgname}-${version}.tar.gz"
checksum=6a63c7c4c39b423a266907e5b76f7d16301b164437dc7635cf25ace730b23c4b

I had done this for clipit git what didn;t work

# Template file for 'clipit-git'
pkgname=clipit-git
version=20120506
revision=1
build_style=gnu-configure
hostmakedepends="git"
makedepends="'gtk+' 'hicolor-icon-theme'"
short_desc="Lightweight GTK+ clipboard manager (fork of Parcellite)"
maintainer="Juan RP <xtraeme@gmail.com>"
license="GPL-3"
homepage="https://github.com/shantzu/ClipIt.git"
provides="clipit-${version}_${revision}"

do_fetch() {
	local url="git://github.com/shantzu/ClipIt.git"
	msg_normal "Fetching source from $url ...\n"
	git clone ${url} ${pkgname}-${version}
}

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

Made a bit of progress ...
changed makedepends="'gtk+-devel" and added
pre_configure() {
  ./autogen.sh
}
I think I did 'sudo xbps-install intltool ' first.  Now have configure errors - will keep looking later on.

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

I installed void in a VB and have it working OK with slim + openbox. I had errors with slim concerning dbus until I did ln -s /etc/sv/dbus /var/service.

During all this I noticed that I was getting initramfs corrupted errors during reboots. Checking I notice that the initramfs-3.17.1_1.img I have is lz4 compressed. Things work fine if I creaet a gzipped version of the initramfs and then boots don't complain. That said it seems that my simple setup boots OK without a ramdisk anyone know why that is? Also what modules does one have to load in grub to get lz4 decompressing OK?

Absolutely. I have a new NUC with intel i5 and it does vbox quite well. I might have a go at Arch runit.

Little confused you install sysvinit to replace sysvint with runit, well aocording to arch wiki.

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

Yes, I understand to get rid of systemd you need the detour of installing sysvinit.
I would be interested in what the limitations of using runit in Arch are: some gnome packages surely won't work because of missing systemd dependencies.

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

Well it's early days for me as I am trying to get to grips with runit. Gnome and maybe other package are going to get tied up with systemd. Am thinking if I can run runit without sysvint and just use busybox / mdev might start a path down a systemd free system.

Have tried running runit under a vm on an arch based system ( sysvinit) not that impressed so far.....

I think you don't need anything other than runit to boot.
I would suggest to check out Void how they do it. As I said before it is mighty fast.

http://archive09.linux.com/feature/54137

Found this know that I had problems with power options as reboot,halt,shutdown,poweroff did not work. If it does work with just runit then all I need to do is add services to it.

Could use systemd-udev or one of the replacements...

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

Hi,
I installed voidlinux on a spare HDD and i find it a very insteresting distro. Have almost setup it at the same way as my arch box and archbang laptop.
Openbox, conky, opera-developer, thunderbird, vlc (and a couple of other programms). All very stable and fast.
The only thing i cannot setup is a NFS share.  I followed this guide https://github.com/voidlinux/documentat … ile-System but i cannot start the server. I think I need some dependencies but i cannot find the missing ones.
I googled the last couple of days now but there is no additional information for this distro.
Sorry if this question is not for this forum but i need some advise and I think/hope it would benefit the voidbang distro as well.
If your interested I could share my findings on this forum.

Thanks in advance.
BR Floris

Re: Void Linux with runit and own package manager

Well finally decided to leave Arch behind:(

Net install with Openbox, Obmenu-Generator, Nitrogen, Conky, Tint2, Nvidia drivers, etc... SpaceFM with Udevil plus the Corbielle(trash) and the Guru's Burn Tools plugins.  Built Screengrab 1.x.x and JA2 Stracciatella from source but other than that pretty happy with what's in the repos.  Could probably do with a few less of those TTY's in Services.

Edited sudoers to give my user nopasswd for shutdown and added this for obmenu-gen, no need for scripts IMHO.
    {item => ['sudo /sbin/shutdown -r now', 'Reboot', 'gnome-session-reboot']},
    {item => ['sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now', 'Shutdown', 'gnome-session-halt']},

Only complaint is the the limited and disorganized documentation but that's getting better.

Prior to taking the dive I installed their Mate desktop iso on my test partition back in June.  Started with daily updates and then started increasing the time between updates.  For the last test I'd let it go for about 6 weeks without updates and everything updated without hitch.

ArchBang crew thanks for the last year and half of trouble free computing.
