Tint2panel crashes after last upgrade [Solved]

After running Archbang flawlessy for 2 years, i have a problem with the tint2panel, it crashes when i start up Mozilla firefox, Orage and probally other applications. Didn't have time to investigate yet, but i thought, others expercienced same kind of problem, so I could save some time, getting answer here. Running Arch with the latest updates (e.g. 4.3..3-3 kernel).

This should be fixed with tint2 12.7, so have marked as solved....

Re: Tint2panel crashes after last upgrade [Solved]

Both firefox and orage are GTK3 apps so that *may* be the common denominator.  Not sure why they would cause tint2 to crash though.

Could you try killing tint2, then starting from the command line, then launching FF.  When it crashes hopefully something would be written to the terminal

Another option is to move the tint2rc file to tint2rc.backup and launching with just a vanilla config.  This would eliminate something in the conf file causing an issue

Re: Tint2panel crashes after last upgrade [Solved]

I've been having segfaults on rpi with archlinuxarm and tint2 0.12.4; I think the reason is cos I don't run compton yet which is one of the things related to the need for the new release 0.12.6

Re: Tint2panel crashes after last upgrade [Solved]

The latest tint2-git 0.12.6 when compiled for armv7h fixes the segfaults on my rpi. I guess it will make its way to the main arch repos sooner or later.

Re: Tint2panel crashes after last upgrade [Solved]

Hello, new user here.

I can confirm the taskbar crashing.
With me and a fully updated new 32 BIT install I cannot use the network manager as both it and the taskbar disappear when I try to enter my details.
I can reproduce the crash with Firefox as well.

There are no problems with ethernet but this means I cannot travel with my device. For example even at home I need to be plugged into the modem - I cannot move away from that fixed site.

I could continue to use the live session - but what use is that if one needs a hard drive install.

Nice to be here.

Thanks

Re: Tint2panel crashes after last upgrade [Solved]

Sorry guys, very busy week at work, it appears after upgrade to 12.4.1 (32 bit version) Problem appears also in VBox on other machine.

[thijs@vbArchB1 ~]$ tint2 -c /home/thijs/.config/tint2/tint2rc
xRandr: Found crtc's: 1
xRandr: Linking output VGA-0 with crtc 0
No XSETTINGS manager, tint2 uses config option 'launcher_icon_theme'.
real transparency off.... depth: 24
panel items: TSC
Systray composited rendering on
tint2 : nb monitor 1, nb monitor used 1, nb desktop 4
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Same problem with vanilla config.

I guess problem will be solved in12.6, thanks Mr.Green for https://gitlab.com/o9000/tint2/blob/master/ChangeLog link, wich states:

2016-01-25 0.12.6
- Fixes:
  - Fix crash on 32-bit systems (issue #546)

12.4 made it in one day to the Repos, so why not 12.6?

Hello summersuns, without panel, you can still start networkmanager from the command line. Another tip is using a dual boot system, one OS with a cutting edge distro like Arch(Bang) and one with a more conservative e.g. Debian. And ofcourse your data in a seperate partition (sharing home partition I won't recommend, but is possible).

Thanks for the tips. I have been thinking about my use of the term "new user" to describe myself.

New user to the archbang forums and archbang as an arch derivative would be more accurate.

archbang 32 bit is a trial install on my older computer also known as an acer aspire laptop with RAM under 1 GB

So far it is running fine and I can see with the monitor applet that the cpu and ram are coping well with archbang much better than it did with another
light linux distro (name withheld as it is not their fault my laptop's specifications cannot rise to the occasion) recommended by distrowatch.

Best wishes,

summersuns

Re: Tint2panel crashes after last upgrade [Solved]

Have just seen tint2 0.12.4-2 can you test see if it now works ok? Then I will get beta isos uploaded to reflect update.

A comment on that bug report says:

This version (and the following 0.12.5) has a general problem with 32bit systems, which got fixed with 0.12.6 and onwards

so I don't think we had a fighting chance with today's update.

cheers

Re: Tint2panel crashes after last upgrade [Solved]

Seems 12.7 is out

https://gitlab.com/o9000/tint2

If you follow instructions on page above 12.7 does work with i686...

Run binary created from tint2 folder for now until arch catches up.

To install from above you will need at least git and cmake (possibly base-devel)

# pacman -Syyu base-devel git cmake --needed
