Re: ArchBang in the Press December 2012

Unless I missed it, it would seem that he hadn't yet come to terms with the Arch rolling release system. Nary a mention of it... Just the quarterly upgrades.

Re: ArchBang in the Press December 2012

http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/reviews/arch … eight-arch

yet another review.

I especially like the comment, in that review, by "Archie Banger".
- Bang On !
big_smile

...anyway, I'm still amazed at how many ill-informed "commenters" like to say Arch and Archbang! are "not equal" ?! <- that is just plain wrong. !
what don't they get ?,
Archbang! = Arch + Openbox,..., for better or worse, even uses all the exact same repo's, ...
:sigh:

Most of the reviewers don't know what they are talking about - they use the words simple, lightweight, fast in a few sentences; show off what applications are available and that's it! That's not the way a review should be done IMO.

What the reviewers should highlight is something like "X has it's own set of tools for quick deployment/installation which Y doesn't making its installation a breeze" or "X is shipped with a custom Linux Kernel x.x.x which brings some ACPI fixes that will reduce the power usage on Y and Z Notebooks". But that's something much of the reviewers don't even know about because they don't do their homework to check the official websites of X and Y to compare what packages versions they have and are they different, the FAQ and/or Wiki pages (if there are any) for highlighted differences between X and Y by the developers of X them self, and things like that.

Most of the reviewers ....

@smily,  I didn't have a problem with the "reviewer / Author" of this, although I agree some are way off, I meant some of the "commenters" at the bottom, regarding the author's review.
ie: "Curtis"?,  He's entitled to his comment, but he was dead wrong, 'cause I don't recall anyone ever being "shunned" in an Archbang forum, but on an "Arch Forum" I think "Shun" are some of their moderators' alias's.

- the Review itself was ok, geared more for absolute n00bs who want to learn Arch via Archbang, or just use Archbang, and it works too, in most cases, as I'm sure that was the author's intended audience.

I think he means the AL forums, not AB forums. And there is a recent example: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=154819

I would somewhat agree on that, I was just pointing out that there is a lot more to be said because the reviewer give a first impressions to the users and it shouldn't be missleading:

"as well as giving you very little info on what you’re doing with the partitioning" - that's because AB is supposed to be "user-friendly"
"So it’s overall still a very interesting distro, on the one hand giving people a base to start with Arch without having to deal with building from source" - that is plain wrong, from what I know only a few packages shipped with AB are pre-compiled from source because they are not available in the official repositories but are in AUR and AL is not a source-based distribution either, altought the choice is given.

Re: ArchBang in the Press December 2012

Well, I can only agree with you on this one.

Luckily for me, a couple years back I discovered Arch via "Whitson's" (original)older review version, and I found it a very good Arch review/article
http://lifehacker.com/5680453/build-a-k … he-process
-I can't be bothered looking for the older link for his Arch install right now, but it was before all this grub2/systemd stuff.

Needless to say, Whitson almost always writes an excellent Arch review combo howto, ...., I wish he would do another Archbang review again, even just for the newer members.
