The fact that Microsoft, for the very first time, announced that it has to build its own (Hardware) Tablet/PC is a milestone.
But it's funny how none of these (not-so-great) articles seem to mention the fact that Linux is also why M$ has to do this. Also, M$ has made it's own hardware before, with likes of xbox,... but anyway.
The point is, M$ can no longer profitably sell software. So now, M$ has to finally resort to building it's own proprietary Tablet/PC to go with its proprietary software.
Meaning, to me, Linux, BSD, and literally thousands of other open, and powerful applications such as OpenOffice/LibreOffice, Mplayer, Gimp, OpenSSH/SSL,... are finally taking their toll on M$.
M$ may drown trying to compete against Apple's iPads, iPhones,... but then again, who can really predict anything ?
"...Microsoft is breaking from longstanding tradition, and longstanding contracts by choosing instead to produce its own Tablets/PCs..."
I have a sneaky feeling though that those other giant hardware manufactureres such as Asus, Dell, Acer, Samsung, Toshiba,... are NOT going to like Microsoft for doing this, and we will soon see much more "friendlier" PC's, Laptops, Netbooks, ... being built for Linux, from all these and other PC, and Motherboard makers...
...wishful thinking...

You would think that deploying/using a free OS like Android on a mass scale in tablets should wet the appetite of the hardware producers to more control and autocracy.
But most of all they always are very conservative and cautious in their moves.
