Rainbow distortion of text

I see very visible fringing of text with red, green and blue on my CRT display.  It is particularly visible when viewing white text on dark background as in LXterminal.  I thought this might have something to do with anti-aliasing so I used LXappearance to turn off anti-aliasing and set sub-pixel geometry to "none", but this had no effect.

This is a fresh install of ArchBang 2012-05.  Previous version did not have this problem.  I see this problem even when first running the Live CD before installation.

I have an up-to-date Arch Linux system running on the same computer which does not exhibit this problem.
