Re: Suggestions May 2012

Disc integrity checking (md5sum) available from the live cd menu. (Like the RAM memtest.) Saves a few minutes for those running into issues and it would only add a few bytes to the .iso.

Would have thought it was better to check md5sum before you burn/dd/cpoy iso iamge.

Re: Suggestions May 2012

Thanks for the great work first, running Archbang 2012.05 and it's the best rolling distribution ever.

That said, here some suggestions on further improvements:

- add gParted - comes handy if you want to change the partition layout before installing
- add ncdu (shows folder sizes for a whole directory tree)
- add elinks (textmode browser), as fallback in case something goes wrong with Xorg (...)
- replace pcmanfm with thunar, mainly for custom actions (I miss my ncdu and catfish context menu entries !!) - I know the pcman vs. thunar discussion is as old as, no, not even Archbang but Crunchbang, but I just couldn't resist wink
- add VLC as additional media player (movies that don't work in gmplayer usually work in VLC and the other way round)
- Alt+F1 as additional shortcut for main menu
- Super+X as shortcut for Exit (oblogout)

I also think the size of the image is not important, as long as it still fits on a CD (for older PCs that can't boot from USB), but if you really want to save space, I wouldn't miss parcellite, xf-burn and dmenu

Re: Suggestions May 2012

Size is everything, would like to get ArchBang more minimal. most of what you want can be easily installed under live session.

Re: Suggestions May 2012

IMHO (2012.05) is already skinny enough, meanaing almost every other distro is hitting the ~650MB -> +700MB cd-sizes, and being that AB is only around 490MB there is still lots of room for future expansion left, no ?
For example, substituting "FF"(Firefox) for something tiny like a Midori web browser, may save a lot of initial space, but that would just be askin' for future problems.... It's either IE, or FF in this world.

The "BSD" things in life are "Free", and "Open", and so is ArchBang!

Re: Suggestions May 2012

Moved from  other closed thread:

Mr Green:  Firefox is swiss army knife of a browser, Chrome would be a second choice but its huuuge!!!!.....

Would really like to bring ArchBang nearer 450mb.

Once you take out nouveau and virtualbox drivers you are nearly there..

@axel886, I happen to have an older version of Archbang that came with Thunar.  I am interested in your custom actions.  Could you start a new topic under FAQs, Tips and Tutorials called "Thunar Tricks" or similar?  Then add your custom actions and how to set them up.  This would be useful for those using Thunar.  Thank you.

Re: Suggestions May 2012

Thunar won't be back. It's rubbish in my experience and the first thing I change when trying out Xfce distros. When SpaceFM moves to the main repositories it will become the ArchBang file manager.

As far as adding stuff like VLC, GParted, etc., it will be left to the user (LTTU). We want to keep ArchBang small,  easy to install and most customisations left up to the competent user. I may upload my personal version of ArchBang (fully pimped out) with LibreOffice, VLC, Clementine, Skype, GParted, Gimp, Deluge, Texmaker, etc. at some time in the future for others to download. This would be an unsupported unofficial release.

Re: Suggestions May 2012

Going to switch shotwell for gpicview.

Possibly remove obkey and obmenu [openbox menu editor]

If I can make some room then I do not mind adding gparted, but you guys need to come up with some ideas smile

Awesome!! Barthalion must have just moved it this morning!! Would leave obkey and obmenu. I think we're good as long as we're under/around 500 MB.

Re: Suggestions May 2012

Great that spacefm is in the repo's!! I strongly support the suggestion of adding gparted to the liveCD.
I never trusted the partition tool coming with earlier AB versions and always partitioned with gparted before using the liveCD.

Re: Suggestions May 2012

Installed gparted under ArchBang live, if you access it from menu you get gsku dialog. Only as live does not have a password you cannot get it to authenticate.

Workaround possibly add sudo to gparted-pkexec

#!/bin/sh
pkexec "/usr/sbin/gparted" "$@"

Any changes would of course have to be reversed post install

Just ckecking SpaceFM getting this

[mrgreen@macmillan ~]$ spacefm

** (spacefm:1216): WARNING **: No root settings found in /etc/spacefm/ Setting a root editor in Preferences should remove this warning on startup. Otherwise commands run as root may present a security risk.

Got no file /etc/spacefm

Re: Suggestions May 2012

Please change xarchiver to file-roller, not because I use it (which I do instead of xarchiver) but because of the following:

Reason is that it's buggy and has been unmaintained for close to 3
years. There's currently one open bug about it [1], which I'm not
willing to troubleshoot.

The suggested alternative application is GNOME's archive tool, File Roller.

Unless anyone objects, I'm going to move it to the AUR in a few days.

I'm fine with that. I seem to have been maintaining my own patched
version for better xz support anyway... I just installed file-roller
and it looks a good alternative.

Re: Suggestions May 2012

In the old suggestion thread, there was a suggestion to add the AUR package obdevicemenu (an Openbox pipe menu for the management of removable media with Udisks) to the menu.

Re: Suggestions May 2012

First suggestion, and this is nit-picky, but only have one suggestions thread for the next release. smile  Second, install gtk-engine-unico by default for gtk3 support and a theme that supports it (maybe something like Zukitwo with the dark window borders). My personal opinion is QDark Studio is a terrible looking theme and is a step down from Shiki-statler.

I like the trend of installing less AUR based packages. Overall 2012.05 is a nice release and since most of my complaints are only cosmetic they can be easily changed by me.

concerning SpaceFM:
will catfish and nitrogen be eliminated, since their functionality can be performed by SpaceFM?

@fschiff interesting suggestion, I have never used catfish. Nitrogen was just a gui way to change background... certainly will look into it
