ArchBang 2012.05 is out in the wild

As announced at http://archbang.org/news/archbang-2012- … n-the-wild

Big thanks to whole team for their continued hard work answering questions on the Forums and a huge monsterous thanks to the new ArchBang Developer, Mr Green for his relentless work on the new release .iso!! Without him, we would still be waddling around doing a 25 step workaround to get ArchBang/Arch updated.

Re: ArchBang 2012.05 is out in the wild

Are the right iso files linked in the release announcement/download section? It says that ArchBang 2012.05 is out, but the links refer to archbang-2012.04.30-i686.iso and archbang-2012.04.30-x86_64.iso respectively.
Shouldn't that be archbang-2012.05.30-i686.iso and archbang-2012.05.30-x86_64.iso? Just wondering...
My internet connection is very slow, and I don't want to spend several hours downloading an iso image just to find out afterwards that I grabbed the wrong one.

Keep up the good work, I've been an Arch Linux user since the first release in 2002, and I really appreciate all the efforts of the developer team.

Bye,
LinuxFreak

Re: ArchBang 2012.05 is out in the wild

It's the right release.

The first ArchBang release was in January 2010. Don't know what you were using in 2002 cuz it wasn't ArchBang. I was using Slackware and Gentoo smile

I built the 05 release isos on the last day of April hence 04. As you can imagine uploading takes quite a while so I tend to do that when early in the morning when my family are not hogging the connection.

The initial release of Arch came out in March 2002.  There was something on their front page about it

Thx for clarifying this issue - downloading right now. Can now see how that 04 slipped into the iso name.

Took another look at that old Homer cd. Actually, it's Arch Linux, but the name which was once written onto that disk with a cd marker is hardly readable any more. In fact, that cd is almost see-through - the silver reflective coating is all but gone. I think ArchBang somehow "slipped" onto my pc quite a while back (2010?) when my old hard disk died and I desperately needed to get my box up and running again. Installing ArchBang instead of doing a real Arch Linux install from scratch and restoring my settings from the slow tape streamer was just the ticket. I had been running Blackbox besides dwm on Arch Linux, so the switch from my customized Arch Linux install to ArchBang was visually not all that noticeable. But the install process was certainly a very smooth experience, with all my hardware working right OOB and very sane default settings for the pre-installed apps.

Re: ArchBang 2012.05 is out in the wild

Thank you, Very nice.

On my desktop, Radeon X600 graphics worked straightaway.  On a Compaq laptop  Nvidia 6150 doesn't work with Nouveau, but VESA option was functional, I can thereafter install the Nvidia proprietary driver.   Broadcom wifi also worked straightaway.  Very good!

If you know how to get rid of it, you're no longer a noob IMO :-)

Re: ArchBang 2012.05 is out in the wild

@Oliver  - you're right, but actually I didn't know (initially) how to get rid of it, until I saw the http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?pid=13909#p13909
that's why I now want to also say a humble, but serious "CONGRATS !!!"  to this Forum in general, for always being so helpful and informative to everybody, truly.
Cheers.

"...ArchBang will now be released 4 times per year..."
nuff said. That gutsy predication alone, should be enough for us all.
Hey!,  Stan & Co, and to all, thanks very much for that kind of dedication and support, to keep the ArchBang train a rollin' smoothly ...

I'm sayin' it now, 'cause I won't say it again -LoL / .

@ rabbit, thanks for the feedback on the drivers!

@oliver and Kruppt Absolutely!!!!

@scjet Rick, you've been with us long enough to know why I added No Noobs No Bozos wink LOL The whole incentive is to not be 'either' and become a competent independent user. Research, experiment, break your system, learn how to fix it and help others willing to show the same spirit. A big thanks to you for your long time participation and being part of the community. It's users like you who keep us doing what we do here!!

Re: ArchBang 2012.05 is out in the wild

Thanks to the team of dedicated developers for a wonderful Linux experience for me so far. But now for a silly question: do I need to download the iso files and burn to CD all over again as I did when first installing AB, or is it sufficient to just do sudo packer -Syyu?

Regularly running 'sudo packer -Syyu' will keep your system as up to date as someone who installed the latest iso yesterday with a couple of caveats:

1) your desktop environment won't be using the same scheme as the latest, but this is purely aesthetics.
2) some apps have been removed from older releases and some apps have been added.

If you *really* want the latest look and feel, you can download the source files, find the 'skel' dir and begin copying files the files over (look at .config/tint2 and .config/openbox etc)

The packages are a little more tricky and it's not worth trying to convert IMO.  There are no *major* differences that I'm aware of (although major is, of course, subjective)

Re: ArchBang 2012.05 is out in the wild

hi, where can I find the source files?
From the download page the download link of archbang2012.05.sourcefiles.tar.gz
http://sourceforge.net/projects/archban … z/download
leads to sourceforge but there are only the iso-image files.
