Really Slick!

Being a longtime sufferer of DISTROMANIA  I grabbed a copy of your new 32 bit release and just loaded it onto an old ToSat lap. Speed rules and you guys are my new BFF!!!  Great performance and smooth silky operation that leaves the others (6 loaded)  behind. This seven year old piece of hardware with a P4 (533fsb) and 1gig ram is performing so well I intend to make it my boot default.
Congratulations to the Archbang crew for producing a first class distro.

Re: Really Slick!

after failing with other arch based distros... this one did it. very slick and amazing. archbang is the reason that i am now able to run arch Linux.

my only gripe with this distro is.... actually i don't have any. it was fast, easy, good looking and testing this in live mode was icing on the cake.

i wish you guys good luck with this project and thank you again

Re: Really Slick!

We're glad you like it! ArchBang is the son of my 2 favorite Linux distributions: #! & Arch Linux. #! stole my heart from Linux Mint for the Debian/Ubuntu family since it was the fastest non-bloated distro I've ever seen. As for Arch, you do everything from scratch and it's a rolling-release distro so something that would come out of these 2 distributions would definitely rock! There's many people who made this possible and I'm grateful for it. At first, I simply wanted to have #! running on Arch but as you follow the following thread, you'll see what happened big_smile

We're happy that you're happy big_smile. After all, what we want is just a simple, fast & stable system & no blue screen of death or viruses tongue

Re: Really Slick!

Archbang is now # 38 on Distrowatch and climbing! More and more people are getting curious about "Our" distro, which will help us get better and better. Thank you Will for the work that you have done, and thank you to everyone giving a helping hand. I installed Symbiosis yesterday, updated using packer (packer -Syyu) and configured in less than 1/2 an hour a basic system on my HP dv6000 series laptop w/dual processors @ 1.66 GHz, 3 gig of ram, nothing fancy, multi-booting via legacy Grub by adding Symbiosis to Grub manually. Wireless network was detected and I was on the net in less than 2 minutes! I haven't updated my video drivers to the newest nvidia yet and I need to tweak Archbang to my liking, but in a nutshell, Archbang 64 bit edition was installed and working on first try in less than 1/2 an hour! Great job!

Re: Really Slick!

I cannot take all the credits for myself when ArchBang had its first installer thanks to sHy big_smile. I got to say that the world of open source is a wonderful thing: you benefit from the work others have done (such as corenominal for #!), Calimero (for having an older Arch Linux distro w/ OpenBox) and the Arch Linux team (for providing most of the tools you need to create anything lol) to finally create what YOU trully wanted (ArchBang). So long life to the world of open source! big_smile
[In a closed source world, things would have been copyrighted and I would have been sued by many people LOL]

And since I'm sharing my source files, someone will probably do something better than ArchBang in the future (now that would be awesome tongue). We need to keep in mind that OpenBox itself is a fork of Blackbox yikes. In other words, forking is a good thing and people can fork @ will whatever they want in the world of GNU/Linux. It's a friendly competition!

EDIT: Speaking of forking, I believe we're getting forked at this time by Elegance Linux wink

Re: Really Slick!

Arch One looks interesting,  a pity I don't have a netbook.
Elegance is totally vague.
What intrigues me the most the guy didn't mention his efforts here on the forum nor what he was trying to achieve. His release notes are also totally enigmatic.

Re: Really Slick!

I want to express my gratitude and respect for willextreme, who is keeping this archbang distro in the air on its own, it seems.
As far as I know there are no more active devs involved. That must be a lot pressure.
Anyway you pulled it off again with Symbiosis. Hope you will stay on finding time and energy to keep up the good work and thanks again.

Re: Really Slick!

Thanks pablokal smile
The secret is to love YHWH above all (because He makes a difference in life) & to love people (including people who criticize you because they somehow help you improve lol). Being encouraged helps a lot as well: that's how ArchBang was born. Whether its ArchBang or Arch Linux that goes up on Distrowatch makes me happy since we're based on them big_smile

Re: Really Slick!

I second that, pablocal. Thanks to Will we have a great distro Archbang, based on an even greater distro Arch that we can enjoy and work with. Thanks for the great work you do Will; I too appreciate your efforts. Roland

Re: Really Slick!

This is a most excellent work. A one man band effort that kicks it hard.
I appreciate all the effort you have put into it.
Once I have this OS fully tricked, it shall be my main one.

Thanks

Re: Really Slick!

"If you have Symbiosis fully updated with everything working perfectly, you don't need to get this release"

Nice to hear that...Keep up the good work!!!

I was not an Arch guy, but you showed how nice things are.
Btw, have a look at Austrumi 2.2.5, and check whether you can make something like that? It has a nice conky too...

Take care & have a nice day!

Re: Really Slick!

Thanks for you Luis, for your supportive we-attitude.
Indeed AB is as successful as we're making it together, helping each other out of our problems.

Re: Really Slick!

I think Distrowatch shows just what a good job Willxtreme did in making this distrobuttion. Archbang is only a couple years old and is already climbing to the top.

Thank you Willxtreme for your work.

Re: Really Slick!

I think the distrowatch rankings are artificially low... The ubuntu score, for example, gets a huge boost every 6 months but rolling distro users have no need to grab the latest and greatest image every so often

Re: Really Slick!

If you look at the 7 day trends you can see that it is only going to go higher maybe in the top 25.

Re: Really Slick!

Hi to all, today i installed ArchBang on my desktop along other Linux distros.
I installed the previous version 2010.10 as in that version there is wvdial that allow a 3G cellphone connection. After installation i upgraded the system, installed nvidia graphics driver, and now i'm here with my magnificient ArchBang Linux Distro.

My compliments to all developers and contributors. :-)
