Nvidia problem with black screen, freezing using XBMC or game [Solved]

]This is a continuation of a pacman thread: here

Whenever I try to start up XBCM and click on a video, or start up a game (Savage II), the sound shutters, sometimes the video goes black, then the sounds stops all together. I can still move my mouse around but I can't click on anything or use commands such as Ctrl Alt F1. I'm forced to restart my computer from the case.

I've restarted a half dozen times already, which can't be healthy for my hard drive. Does anyone have an idea of what this might be?

My computer was working fine last week. The last change, I remember making, before experiencing any problems was with the key-editor, obkey. I add a calculator button. (BTW, keyboard doesn't have a Sys-Req key. That's why I haven't restarted using RPEIUB)

My system is now up to date, since deleting my old drivers. (Thanks again Mike)

My system: Intel Z68, nvidia Gforce GTX 460.

My guess would be that the version of XBCM and the newest kernel etc don't go well together.
These kind of problems happen rather often in Arch.
What I would try as a first option is to install the kernel-lts and make that a special boot option:

You will also have to install install nvidia-lts and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add it to you boot options

In my menu.lst it looks like this:
title ArchBang Linux LTS kernel
root (hd0,10)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts root=/dev/sda11 ro noresume 4
initrd /boot/initramfs-linux-lts.img

Boot the linux-lts and try if it works better for you.
Having the long time service kernel installed may save you in more situations.

Other options are to downgrade the kernel and the xbcm version.

As last resort you could try the nouveau drivers and see if these go well together with xbcm.
Have you searched for/ visited a xbcm specific forum with this problem?

This is not a XBMC specific problem. It happens when I try to play Savage II or if I were to run the same video under gpodder I get the same result, (computer freezing described above). Which reminds me I was also messing with crontabs before the problem occurred... following instructions at another site.

The only way I've found to watch a video without locking up the computer is to use VLC directly or watch it online using flash.

I hadn't run a system update in while before the problem occurred (more than 2 weeks). It was only after I experienced a problem did I attempt a system update.

Perhaps, I should backtrack on the cron changes and uninstall xbmc-gpodder-integration. What do you think?

So it has to do which video output driver is used.
In smplayer you can investigate that easier than with vlc; go to options,. preferences, video tab and see what video output driver works for you.

For the rest trying to get back to a situation that worked, seems like a good plan I would try too.

Hey, that worked. [Problem solved]. I had to install smplayer and Mplayer to follow your instructions, I then first tried cvidix output driver and like magic wala I have fully working video again.
