Hi, newcomer here

Hi, I'm noob in linux world but brave enough to take challenge installing archbang smile My Win XP HP compaq destop was broken, so I bought new nonOS desktop and seek affordable OS to run it. Finally I chose archbang that I can built my own slim system and it has rolling release feature (although its being bloated because I installed KDE/gnome games and Wine for my kids so they still be able run their favourite education CD). The Arch one is too complicated for me right now.  I hope I can learn everything from this forum. Sorry for my bad English, because its not main language in Indonesia. I guess one of Archbang devs live in Indonesia... Thanks for making Arch easier to install.

Re: Hi, newcomer here

You are taking the hard road.
If Arch proves too difficult change to Debian for instance Linux Mint.
Realize that Arch is very much on the edge of the new software and therefore these newest versions often contain bugs.
What I did on our older home pc is to install an updated AB version and not update it for a year and then do a new installation.
In this way a lot of the update issues won't be shared by your family.

Re: Hi, newcomer here

Thanks for your suggestion and warning. I do realize the risk and hopefully I have patience not to update blindly. We'll see how long I can 'enjoy' this.

Anyway I'm thinking how to configure or install application launcher for kids user (like dock/icon or something) so they just one click away to launch app. Or how to hide certain applications from openbox menu. Probably need more friendly desktop environment for the user?

Well I already read a lot about Linux for this week. I'll try to do some DIY configuring my system till I give up. I know people try many distros until they find one that suit their needs, but I prevent myself trying everything. That's why I choose simple distro that have a potential to build it to my liking. Please cmiiw.

Re: Hi, newcomer here

You have to discern between the Operating system and the windowmanager.
Openbox is a very stable window manager and that is very important working with children.

Working with openbox can be very simple.
You can configure a windowslike startmenu with lxpanel or adeskbar (in the panel mode).
You can even show icons on your desktop when you use pcmanfm-mod.
You can learn your kids to start applications with keyboard short-cuts  by adapting the conky so most important keyboard short-cuts are mentioned there.
Imho is Openbox  a much more ergonomic window manager because the use of the mouse can be reduced  to a large extent.
