[almost solved]Video driver: VGA Intel 82G33/G31 (rev 10)

Regarding The instructions at "Video driver" in the DOC
After Tiping in:  "lspci | grep VGA"  at step 3 I get:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10)

Which leaves me parralized at step 5 (pacman -S your_video_driver)

Because I could not find my driver at step 4 (pacman -Ss xf86-video | less)

I've installed the xf86-video-intel driver
but I assume it doesnt work because the PC opens up in the console and openbox doesnt appear when I tipe in "startx"

(also inform me if this post is horribly presented and whether a person needs more info to detect the problem)

Thank you!

Did you change your xorg files? more information here:

Re: [almost solved]Video driver: VGA Intel 82G33/G31 (rev 10)

Let me start my second post off by giving more information

When I enter the command "startx" I get a bunch of lines telling me what the meaning of the symbols like EE, !! and II are
Then It tels me that its using  /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

And in the middle one clear error stands out:

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Thankyou for the reply, I'm on the hunt for the xorg files! :-) the intel-driver-wiki however (as far as I can see) makes no note of files that should be changed when you add the package.

However the arch-xorg-wiki does talk about adding a Monitor settings file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d for configuration purpusses. I think I'm gonna try that considering that "startx" said that there were no screens found. Ill follow the instructions there and report back soon.

If it helps, the current contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d looks like this:

2012-03-25--1332713070_404x127_scrot.png

the DOC told me to delete a file called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-gpudriver.conf of which the contents were:

Section "Device"
	Identifier "Card0"
	Driver "vesa"
EndSection

OK reporting back

Another apperition which appears at startup and repeats every 5 min is the following:

INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

Nothing changed after adding the monitor file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ but I did note a line informing me of an error log file that might be of help.

Re: [almost solved]Video driver: VGA Intel 82G33/G31 (rev 10)

20-gpudriver.conf

Section "Device"
	Identifier "Card0"
	Driver "intel"
EndSection

Put that file back into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and try startx again

Re: [almost solved]Video driver: VGA Intel 82G33/G31 (rev 10)

Adding the file did not work (yet. Considering there could be hundreds of other configurations of which one or two might actually work).

I'm gonna check out the reaction I get when I type in xorgconfig (according to this forum post)
I'm also gonna check some of the segestions at the FAQ Error Messages at the Xorg Foundation

Ill report back later.

Here's my latest /var/log/Xoth.0.log

Re: [almost solved]Video driver: VGA Intel 82G33/G31 (rev 10)

After trying "xorgconfig" "xorgcfg" and "x -configure" Arch did not recognize any of those commands, whatever they ment.

I rememberd some of the forums talking about vesa being a default or broadly compatible driver

www.x.org wrote:

vesa is an Xorg driver for generic VESA video cards. It can drive most VESA-compatible video cards, but only makes use of the basic standard VESA core that is common to these cards. The driver supports depths 8, 15 16 and 24.

So then then I installed the vesa drivers

# pacman -Ss xf86-video-vesa

and brought back the original /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-gpudriver.conf

After restarting it worked. It booted into the slim login screen without me even tiping in startx.

Though I feel I can't mark this [solved] considdering the log file mensioned the Intel driver being compatible with the G33 chips which looks a lot like 82G33/G31. Or is that just me? Anyway I'm satisfied with vesa. I dont play games or so forth. Maybe one day someone wil figure it out.

Here's what the log file said about the intel driver's compatibility:

Re: [almost solved]Video driver: VGA Intel 82G33/G31 (rev 10)

Ok so you have vesa working if xf86-video-intel is installed try changed vesa to intel in 20-gpudriver.conf

Reboot and see what happens, post any errors

grep -e '(EE)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Intel stuff can be found here

I replaced it with intel and got this error:

[ 36.203] (EE) No devices detected.

Ill try it again some time later
