boot troubles: mptables, explicit irq entries, acpi=off

For the last 6 months or so none of the new linux versions boot correctly on my computer without the

acpi=off

boot flag.

Now when i boot up i get this:

[ 0.000000] BIOS bug, no explicit IRQ entries, using default mptable. (tell your hw vendor)

I looked up my mobos bios on intel site, but im not sure about bios versions,
my bios is version = GC11020M.15A.2010.2006.0817.0956
Theirs is: GC11020M.86A and ends with version 1087

Ive googled the subject extensively. Some have suggested disabling hyperthreading? I dont know that its any more relevant than the thousands of other educated and semi educated guesses lying around on aged wikis and forum threads lol.

Im inclined to think it's a kernel thing since older distributions boot up without the acpi=off flag. Ideas?

Re: boot troubles: mptables, explicit irq entries, acpi=off

I found where my error is coming from, just not sure why

		/*
		 * If there are no explicit MP IRQ entries, then we are
		 * broken. We set up most of the low 16 IO-APIC pins to
		 * ISA defaults and hope it will work.
		 */
		if (!mp_irq_entries) {
			struct mpc_config_bus bus;

			printk(KERN_ERR "BIOS bug, no explicit IRQ entries, using default mptable. (tell your hw vendor)\n");

			bus.mpc_type = MP_BUS;
			bus.mpc_busid = 0;
			memcpy(bus.mpc_bustype, "ISA   ", 6);
			MP_bus_info(&bus);

			construct_default_ioirq_mptable(0);
		}

Re: boot troubles: mptables, explicit irq entries, acpi=off

only with the acpi=off flag. Otherwise it hangs on "waiting for uevents".

Re: boot troubles: mptables, explicit irq entries, acpi=off

acpi_os_name="Microsoft Windows XP"
doesn't help either.

These people have similar problems too

There so much info to wade through, what cpu have you got on that board?

Have you had any distros running on it at all?

Re: boot troubles: mptables, explicit irq entries, acpi=off

elementary jupiter and crunchbang (9.04) both bootup livecd fine. theyre both based on older versions of ubuntu.

but with regards to my particular hardware (pentium 4's), it seems to have been a particular problem in 2007/2008. And if you google it now "only boots with acpi=off" youll see the problem flare up again around last fall. In some bug reports ive seen it labeled as a regression.
