Archbang + Ratpoison = win :]

Check out my uber-minimal Ratpoison setup :]
Been trying out many dynamic and manual tiling WMs,
now I'm sold for Ratpoison - just what I've been looking for.

@pablokal

I like the overall look. Besides that the composition of the different colors is nice.

Re: Archbang + Ratpoison = win :]

@pablokal:
You're right, the screenshot shows not so much about the capabilities of Ratpoison.
Things I like about RP:
1.,
Basically, it's a tiling WM. What sets apart RP from dynamic tiling WMs is the
manual tiling; this means, that while for example dwm, awesome, xmonad has
predefined window layouts, in RP you make your own, as you want it to be.
If you'd like for some reason 8 vertical columns in your screen, from those two split in half, you're free
to do it, there are no restrictions.
2.,
Minimality. By default, there isn't anything else apart from your window. No decorations, no titles, etc.
RP opens all windows maximalized, you can easily switch between them, and you can get a list of opened
windows. If you wouldn't want full screen windows, then you can start splitting the screen.
3.,
Nerdness-factor :]
Ratpoison lives up for it's name: since I've made my keymapping, I really don't use the mouse - apart from
flashgames and the occasional Assaultcube frenzy big_smile
/for browsing, I use FF + vimperator, which I highly recommend/

But there are some restrictions, for example, RP doesn't allow floating windows _ever_.
You just can't float and place your windows with the mouse. That's by design, and so far,
it's fine for me - I was surprised, that I don't miss the floating layout. Of course, that could
cause some setbacks if you use The Gimp, but you can tile your screen and place the toolbars
to different frames, and off you go.

Phew, well, here I am, preaching about RP :]
I just say, go ahead and try it, but it's definetely won't be the favourite WM for everyone;
feels crazy for the first time - to be honest, it still feels crazy, but it's freakin' awesome big_smile
There are some excellent pointers how to start at the Arch Wiki, if you'd like to experiment with RP :

And here's a usual setup, which I use daily:

Re: Archbang + Ratpoison = win :]

I had already written a post before you answered (thanks btw for explaining is such detail) but forgot to post it. I will give ratpoison a try.

Found this review about the basics of Ratpoison: http://www.linuxgoodies.com/review_rat.html
Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ratpoison
Site: http://www.nongnu.org/ratpoison/

What is interesting is to me that is is a mouseless window manager.
What I don't like about it is, that it is a tiling wm.
I like to see one application at  a time.
