Flux plus Arch = Fluxar?

Playing around this weekend with making a new pimped ArchBang for my own installations due to the recent changes in Arch got me thinking about making a Flux + Arch .iso to play around with. I've done a mockup desktop that you can see below. The .iso is cooking right now. I know it will work, but the problem is what am I going to do with it once I make it and start tweaking it?

@djim123 I'm worried that I will end up turning this into a project instead of just doing this for fun. The temptation to put this later on SourceForge is bothering me. I don't want to start something I may not have time later to finish. Time to test in VBox.

I wouldn't post this on Sourceforge, but just one of the many upload sites that are around.
If you really would want to make this a alternative the crux of it would be in the details.
And these should be very well put forwards: I think that livarp did a great job in transferring knowledge about the different wm's.

Maybe we should accumulate more tweaking experience with fluxbox and then share it in a form of an iso.

The problem for me is in tweaking the installer. I saw how difficult this can be with siduction. I don't know if I would use the arch installer. I'd be more inclined to use something like Tribe from Chakra, or maybe Anaconda or even Ubiquity. Then maybe... and I say maybe.... a base form of Fluxar could have a limited choice of packages added during the installation if so desired if Tribe was used.

Tribe is the Mercedes among the installers, looks luxurious, runs perfect and with a lot of options.

Thanks guys for the interest. I will continue along at my own pace and slowly piece it together and do it correct the first time rather than rush into it with excitement now and then spend a lot of time fixing things. The big hurdle will be the installer. I like the very simple installer on Ghost BSD (definitely following the KISS principle) but obviously because this is Arch based there is a certain criteria and number of steps that needs to met to complete a successful installation. I think I need to look at CTKArch and what Calimero has done for his installation as well as a bunch of other installers first.

(that is, until all future hardware makers' actually jump on board !?),
and it'll always be in the making, ever closer, and yet ever-searched for.
Instead, adaptable compromizes', is the best we could implement for now, and of course, that's what we "stiil" all do,

Yeah ... I am all for using a 'better' installer.

I don't know which is better ... I only want simpler.

I sent my girlfriend, a copy of the Archbang LiveCD (she is currently using Mint-9) and she is having a difficult time installing AB.
She has reviewed the Archbang and Arch/Linux install Wiki pages - even found a video for installing Arch on YouTube.
I have tried to 'walk her through' the install process, over the phone, to no avail. Archbang is still not installed on her PC.

It would be useful to describe systematically the issues that arise installing AB.
1. There are some hardware specific problems that are very difficult to avoid; mostly problems with some motherboards like intels Sandy Bridge ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_bridge ), many Broadcom wireless cards etc.
2. video and sound problems can mostly be solved when cleverly using wiki's and forums;
3. there are the partitioning and grub issues that are mostly relatively easy to solve; when people stick to certain rules.

Yep, "Tribe" might be the best, so far, if you want a more GUI'fied powerful installer.

On a side note, I realize. historically ArchBang (the name) came from Crunchbang ?,
and not to go too off-topic here, but since archbang has more-or-less developed in its own way, thanks to Willy,
I'm wondering if possibly a more suitable (future) name like:
ArchBox (arch + openbox), if Will might be interested in that ?, and beside it,
ArchFlux (arch + fluxbox)

or even just ArchFox. - (get it?, for an Arch distro with both a choice of Flux, and openbox environment) ?

Or, to even expand more, "lightly", in other words, just go all the way;
ArchFLOX = (Arch + Fluxbox + Lxde + Openbox + Xfce - (and if not Xfce, then just plain "X" for all things UniX - based).

-but ya sry, it'd be a bit more work, and size, to do as well.

The name archbang has sort of grown on me though. It has a cool ring to me. Archbox seems like fluxbox -Does not seem as special in the flow. The bang part of the name might scare some folks though. lol.
I like the tune of ArchFox and ArchFlox, but Archbang simply rocks.!!

I'm also interested in a nicer installer, I feel it would also go nice in Bridge. I might start working on porting Tribe again, it is a really nice installer and is already somewhat Arch-friendly as of right now.

As for Fluxar, the desktop looks nice. Do you have a set of apps yet?

I think I'll stick with the abinstall at the moment as I don't have time to play with Tribe at the moment. Trying to make an unofficial updated iso for ArchBang right now.

After boot cb-welcome should pop up and it will ask what programs user wants to install. There should be editor section: "select your editor: 1. leafpad 2. geany 3. some-super-cool-editor", then it ask what media player user wants to install and so on...

This way user have a choice what he wants to install. Now user have to remove unwanted programs and install what he prefers to use. IMHO this should be implemented to Archbang installer too. Maybe CD size is smaller too because the user downloads the content from the internet?

For somebody who knows the different programs that is a very elegant solution.
I think you should limit your choice to the very well known alternatives like:
firefox, firefox-aurora or chromium,
open-office or abiword
gimp, geeqie or viewnior.

I agree Pablokal. It could be something like this:

Select editor:
1. Firefox (default)
2. Firefox-aurora
3. Chromium
4. None

If user doesn't know what browser to pick, then he probably pick the default one. In case 4. user has option to skip browser install and he will install it manyally.

I like the idea Mastis but I would do it for the regular version only. And for me, the less AUR packages the better. No firefox-aurora. I will include packer but I personally don't use it anymore. I compile all AUR packages myself (makepkg is my friend. lol).

I think, in fact I know that I will make only a minimal install. After using Sabayon's CoreCDX, I'm thinking minimal is the only way to go. I think Jeff Hoogland has got it right with Bodhi Linux and Will is pretty close with AB.

Midori, xterm, leafpad, file-roller, geeqie, spacefm and full networkmanager. LTTU - music player, video player, pdf, office apps, etc.

I myself would like to see wmix for a mixer, wmauda to work with audacious, wmabttery, that kind of thing. I also would not mind the addition of fluxStyle to make changing styles easier.

As a side note...
Arch means chief in greek. Flux comes from flow in latin. Keeping this in mind, Tsunami is a good candidate, and you've got your bang too. If that's too much water for your computer, you could take Blast, as a sonic wave instead of an aquatic one.

Seriously though, Arch +
Fluxbox = Tsunami
Openbox = Blast
IceWM = Avalanche
Xfce = Ratattack
Enlightment = Sunburst
Unity = Mudslide

As a side note...

I've decided to go ahead with Fluxar. It will be a minimal install with my choice of packages for the competent user because there will be no support at all. If you don't know how to use Arch and can't figure out how to use Fluxbox then boo-hoo and go back to Bumtu or Windows!! No noobs and no bozos.

I'm in the process of making some custom styles, wallpapers and will use QDarkStudio4 for the widget theme. Not worried about size but it will be under 700 MB. Need to fine tune the fluxar installer and hopefully by the end of the month there'll be a decent first release .iso

Maybe it it a nice idea to look at livarp 3.2 for inspiration (if you need any); this new release also has fluxbox.

I've always liked fluxbox over openbox. So I'm waiting for Fluxar. But about applications I'd like it more cli oriented, like livarp 3.2 from arpinux, or as minimal as Sabayon corecdx.

Right now, my Fluxar project is postponed indefinitely as I am the new project leader for ArchBang. I would still like to release Fluxbox + Arch but it is put on the back burner for now.
