Linux 3.1.6.1 'fat' problem

Some of you know that I run ArchBang on testing in one of my partitions and the kernel was just updated to 3.1.6.1. USB sticks cause a mounting error like this - error mounting: mount: unknown filesystem type 'fat'. Manually trying to mount and also editing the fstab do not solve the problem. Following instructions https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … ge_Devices and https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ud … SB_devices did not help. It seems almost like 'fat' was 'turned off' in the new kernel. Downgrading to 3.1.5.1 solved the problem. I don't know if this affects other USB devices. Nothing mentioned on the mailing lists yet and for OBVIOUS reasons I won't post this problem on the Arch mailing lists or Arch Forums.

Addendum: I wonder if it has something to do with the new filesystem-2011.12. Hmmmm?

That was my first thought too.
I think my error with sandfox also has something to do with that: http://igurublog.wordpress.com/download … t-sandfox/ comment 21

@pablokal

I remembered your comment on Kruppt's post and that's what got me thinking it might be that.

Re: Linux 3.1.6.1 'fat' problem

No,last feedback from IG:

It appears that remounting bind mounts as readonly isn’t working normally, which may mean they broke something in util-linux 2.20, or that Arch broke something. I’ll look into this further when I have a chance – thanks for the report.

@pablokal
Thanks, I've been holding back my system to before these changes were made.
Back at kernel 3.1.4-1 and related.

Re: Linux 3.1.6.1 'fat' problem

The filesystem problem has disappeared with the release of the 3.1.6.1 kernel out of testing. smile

Re: Linux 3.1.6.1 'fat' problem

After updating to 3.1.6.1 I still have the same problem with sandfox.

Re: Linux 3.1.6.1 'fat' problem

@ Kruppt: would you try and update and see if you get the sandfox error I have?
I am wondering if I have some set up error regarding mount or if it is a arch(bang) specific thing.
