How much control do you have over the server and what O/S is it?

Re: Obarun feedback thread

nothing that is the problem.it's a free web hosting so....

i still waiting an answer from support but nothing to the moment. i need to pay a server for the tranquility.
But i don't known if the projects interest people or not. i means, i saw people that download the iso but no back and paying for a projects without known if it's an interesting projects for people....
so i don't known for the moment. the new stable release v0.4.1 is ready. i have modified some packages more like socklog and fixed little bugs. this version work perfectly. but how many people want to work with it?? that's is the question.
i would like make a repo. but how many people want to work with it?

so i need to make a choice. paying or not paying.

i only can block a complete ip like : 221.176.18.190. but the guys change the ip many times. so it's impossible for me to block him permanently.
i was made a nmap to show all the ip used and blocking an general ip. but nothing change. i don't known why the guys hounds me. i'm just a little guys trying to share my job, nothing more sad
my knownledge about server and security is very very poor, and on php, apache too. it's very difficult for me to make something about these stuffs.

thank for your reply

Re: Obarun feedback thread

One of the problems is that you can only control the upper levels of the OSI model (the application and presentation)... that is some of the apache config; the gifs, the HTML etc

To effectively block a DoS attack, you need to control the lower levels of the model (transport/network - basically TCP/IP)

Any white/black lists you try to incorporate into apache will defeat the point because apache still needs to process the request

Without any help from the hosting provider, the best you can do (IMO) is see whether you can block using subnet masks.  For example, blocking 221.176.18.190/32 blocks 1 specific IP but 221.176.18.0/24 will block 221.176.18.0 --> 221.176.18.255.   And 221.176.0.0/16 is now blocking ~65k IPs

And I'm assuming the method you've been given to block is basically a front-end to iptables (which does support using masks but that doesn't mean the front-end can process them.)

OSI model - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model
IP Mask info - http://doc.m0n0.ch/quickstartpc/intro-CIDR.html

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello
@pablokal, @glats, @xtremyst thank you for your encouragement, pleased. smile

Well, a new repository on github was created named obarun-runitserv. this repository concern packages about runit services.
i think that make a package for a service is a good way to maintain and update it. implement services in official package forces to use runit and it's not a portable concept. All package on this repository comes with a log config file.

a repository called socklog-obarun was created too, to provide socklog and socklog-unix directly.

Moreover the release v0.4.1 is ready today, i'm uploading it on the server. it  will be available by 2-3 hours. this version include the new package of obarun-boot, packages runitserv needed, socklog-obarun. the repo obarun was implemented in /etc/pacman.conf.

this version is stable and up to date. i think it's a last version for a while because the base is very clean and adapted to pass to rolling release smile. the structure concept for obarun-boot is ok too.

so enjoy it an give a back please.

i saw on my server that many people have downloaded obarun.db for the repo. it seems interest people smile

next move, need to work on the site to provide a forum smile

ps: thank to "sticky me"

Great that spacefm and gparted are present. Compton is not my thing but some people like that.
What I miss dmenu, and a  mediaplayer. Why is the iso so big with so little softwre?
Context menu runit is impressive.
Looks good and feels good.  My compliments.

But I have very many doubts: is a systemd  free Arch system, is  it maintainable in the long run?
And the user has to be very aware not to install systemd dependencies installing some program or other.

many people are thinking the same thing. i think it's depend what i would like to turn under it. Xfce is on the queue but kde need to much work.
the essential for me for the moment is to make a clean package base group. aspect of nfs and samba is in the program this week. Certainly it be difficult to maintain a complex system without systemd, but with work and help is not impossible. My doubts is about Kernel.
Many and many comes to see my site and try obarun. that means i'm not alone with the same thoughts about systemd. we (linux community) can work together and make a good things. i believe it, may be i'm a sweet dreamer

Two choices on the life, follow or thinking about ourselves smile

Time will tell the rest smile.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

Consider yourself lucky that you don't get difficult problems posed with hardware you can't check etcetera.
It would be nice if people gave feedback though about what they like or not about Obarun . So testers, give Eric some feedback.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello everybody,

A new repository on github was created to provide obarun-install.

This is a very simple script for make an automatic installation.

This script is preconfigured to provide obarun but you can use it for install your own configuration.
Starting from obarun-iso or official Arch-iso or with a minimal Arch architecture is possible.

If you don't touch anything in these scripts, a fresh installation of obarun is made.

Own repository and AUR repo is supported.

More information can find on : https://github.com/Obarun/obarun-install.

Please if you like it or find a bugs or need more information, give a feedback on :

http://obarun.org/forum

enjoy it

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hi,

i have made a new openbox pipe_menu for managing services

what's news :
       - browse the directory of the selected service
       - showing the pid for the service and the associate log directly in the pipe
       - showing the status for the service and the associate log directly in the pipe
       - disable the service selected and/or the associate log much easier than the old pipe
       - edit ALL the file of the selected service directory, same thing for the associate log
       - send a signal at the service with many option (usr1, usr2, kill, alarm, interrupt, .....), same thing for the associate log
       - viewing the log file with a editor (geany by default)

So just copy and paste this following code in ~/.config/pipe_menu/runit_pipe then

$ sudo chmod +x ~/.config/pipe_menu/runit_pipe

modify your menu to provide it where you want with obmenu3 for example

#!/bin/sh
# This script is under license BEERWARE
# "THE BEERWARE LICENSE" (Revision 42):
# <eric@obarun.org> wrote this file. As long as you retain this notice you
# can do whatever you want with this stuff. If we meet some day, and you think
# this stuff is worth it, you can buy me a beer in return. Eric Vidal
# http://obarun.org
#
# Place this to your .config/openbox/menu.xml :
# <menu id="runitcontrol" label="Runit" execute="/path/to/runit_pipe" />
# Don't forget : chmod +x /path/to/runit_pipe

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello,

A new version of obarun-install is available(github and repo). This new version contain several changes and more features then the previous version.

Change :
      - the script customizeChroot is not launched automaticly by the main script. It means, if you don't specifie to run it you have a base without configuration (locale, hostname, runit, etecetera..)
      - yaourt save the package that was builded on $newroot/var/cache/pacman/pkg/yaourt. Yaourt choose automaticly (if the build crash and you remake the installation) between packages which has been saved on the cache and packages that need to be build.
      - functions have been improved making several tests
      - you can edit multiple time the list of packages while you don't specifie to exit of the packages list menu.

New features :
      - You can now enter in the directory $newroot with Mc (midnight commander). Very useful to do modifications or verifications during the installation.
      - You can resume the installation. It means, when you doing modifications with mc you don't need to reinstall packages.
      - An entry to call customizeChroot script was added.
      - The defaults option (between bracket on the menu), when you change them, are updated automaticly.
      - You can now define for the fresh installation :
                           - the hostname
                           - the locale
                           - the localtime
                           - create an user with your own choice of name. you can create multiple user with different name if you want.
                           - rc.conf is automaticly udpated in functions of your choice(keymap, hostname, locale, timezone)
                           - you can edit the file rc.conf by the editor

      - You can enter in the directory $newroot with mc from the customize menu.Very useful to do modifications or verifications during the installation
      - You can return to the main menu without stopping the installation.

enjoy it and give me a back please.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello

you can find on my github and my repo svopts-obarun

it's a simple script to provide the possibility to enable a service by :

$ svopts enable cups

same thing for disable

it's more practice than

$ ln -s /etc/sv/cups /var/service

you can configure the directory where the script create the service by editing the file /etc/runit/svopts/svopts.conf

enjoy it smile

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello,

A new option was added on this package. You can now create a service and edit files directly. The scripts create files in /etc/sv and /var/log with the name than you have define.

Example :

$ svopts create cups

This command create the directory /etc/sv/cups and the directory /var/log/cups. You will find in /etc/sv/cups the files run, finish, check, the directory /etc/sv/log with the file run and the directory /var/log/cups with the file config. All those directories and files are the correct permissions directly. After creating those files and directories, the script allow you to edit all the files

If you find a bugs, please report it at my forum thanks.

i don't understand where the problem, the link is correct, when i click on it the download proccess start without issue(tested with firefox and downthemall). Same thing with wget all is good

wget -c http://obarun.org/obarun-iso/v0.5.1/obarun_x86_64-v0.5.1.iso

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello,

obarun-install v0.7.4

This the last one and important release. From this one the scripts ask you if you want to update the package from github. Well, it's very useful for me for maintaining this package. The last example is the implementation of libwacom-nosystemd. I had been constraint of make a new version just for one line.
It's not the case anymore. Every changement can be retrieve instantaneously when you launch the script. Obviously you can skip the auto-update if you want, but it's a really good practice to keep it updated.

note: i repeat this script can be used to install what do you want with or without systemd lol.
Mr green , take a look on it, it's very useful for testing purpose before make an iso. make a partition, mount it on /mnt (or where do you want), install the system and test it, then make the iso (i will combine the two soon smile). if you want more details about how it works mail me or ask on my forum smile

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello there,

just for saying : obarun iso was released v0.5.2, minor changes for this one, you can download it here : http://obarun.org/download.html

icecat was replaced by netsurf (nice catch Mr Green), gpg signature is now enabled by default on pacman.conf. The cow_space was increased at 8G. The new repo obarun_testing was added but not enabled by default and, obviously, this iso contain the last version of packages.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

@pablokal, Mr Green thanks smile

obarun-install was released (v0.7.8). You can now create an ISO directly after doing a fresh install, very usefull for maintainer smile. I will make a video and finish the wiki Do It Yourself to explain how to use all the options of the scripts, so a little more patience smile.

note: systemd-boot is not supported for the iso, but i'm sure Mr Green can easily modifier the file make_iso to support it wink.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

clearely i will replace runit by s6 as soon as possible, but need to have a stable version of booting system before.
S6 is much better than runit for a ton of things. So, a change like this need time and work, but s6 is the near future of obarun. When i have started the projects i though about take runit or s6. Runit is much simplier to implement but now i have stable system, it's time to make a progress smile.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

Tried updating my obarun based VM yesterday and I think something messed up all my passwords etc etc. I suspect the new filesystem-obarun package. What seems to have happened is that all the standard files like /etc/fstab /etc/group /etc/gshadow /etc/host.conf /etc/hosts /etc/nsswitch.conf /etc/passwd /etc/resolv.conf /etc/shadow got saved as xxx.pacsave and were replaced by new values. The root toor password combo didn't seem to work, but I was able to recover by using an iso image and mounting the VM /dev/sda so the files could be fixed.

I assume that in fact these precious files should be specified in the PKGBUILD backup list, see here. Perhaps because this was a pkg replacement the rules didn't work well.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

Eric, no problem. I suppose this must be a failure of pacman when  pkg is being replaced by a different pkg; I think it makes the false assumption that the 'precious' file has not been modified.
