Obarun feedback thread

Eric shares his Obarun project.

Feedback here, please.

this is the permanent link for dowload obarun's iso smile

The new release is available here : http://obarun.org/obarun-iso/v0.5.1/oba … v0.5.1.iso
md5sums : e44242d4b195dfdeae4701c4b23850c3

This release was made due of an important change about C++ ABI and to prevent bug about this change.

However, some packages was replaced/erased from the v0.5

    - Obarun-install is installed
    - Nfs-utils and nfs-utils-runitserv is installed
    - Dmraid and dmraid-runitserv is installed
    - Vlc was replaced by whaawmp
    - Firefox was replaced by icecat (better about license and security)
    - Compton-conf is removed

You can find the entire changement about packages -> https://github.com/Obarun/obarun-install/commit/master

    - Syslinux menu was improved.
    - A cleaning has been done about structure, configuration files, to allow reducing iso size (553 Mega for this release).
    - The cow_space issue was fixed and define at 4G by default.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

I wouldn't say no interest... I downloaded it and installed to a virtualbox session but the french keyboard hampered by ability to do much.  Not saying you should fix it but it might take me a few days to get around to playing with it.

Also, the ~800mb ISO *might* put some people off.  Again, not a criticism, just a comment.

Don't get discouraged, you've already achieved a lot.

Ηι eric, I'm downloading the ISO right now, I'll test it under virtualbox as soon as I have some free time and I'll report back.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

you can change the keyboard under the file ~/.config/openbox/autostart, just change fr to us in the line setxkbmap -layout fr &, and relog
not shutdown just exit of the session, if you reboot you loose your change
but i'm on archbang forum, you known that smile

so you have booted apparently, cool it work for a one man smile

i'm not discouraged, i'm impatient to known the reaction of people big_smile

Re: Obarun feedback thread

Ok I just had a quick look on obarun and it looks really good! As an archbanger I'm mostly used to minimal setups, so if you ask me try to keep it as minimal as possible,
meaning give as few preinstalled apps as possible, let the user install the apps he needs and modify the system to his likes. This will decrease the ISO size as well.
Obarun seemed a bit slow at first but this has more to do with the fact that I'm using a pretty old computer (9 years old and counting), killing compton gave it a big boost.
Using french keymap and french menu made it a little difficult to use since I'm not familiar with the language, I think that switching to English will help
you get a bigger audience. All in all you have a very good project going on, I believe that obarun can turn into a very good distro! Well done eric!

thanks for you feedback
"9 years old", cool the iso works on it, good news for me smile

i working on english version, i known this is a problem for english people.
for the size of the iso,i understand what you say, but really i'm not sure that i'm going to minimize the size. the prog inside it's the minimum for routine use of computer. i'm going to think about it smile.
with a poor connection(250-300Kb/s) 800m is downloaded in 20-25 minutes, if i compare to other distro i'm under them.
i'm working to understand how to use github in order that download link be permanent and share the construction of the iso.

I understand your view, as i said it's more of a philosophy issue for me, using Archbang/Arch all these years I'm more used in having a minimal installation and adding the few apps I need, this way I end up with a system that has exactly the needed packages.
Of course a user can uninstall something if he feels he doesn't need it or replace it with some other software that fits him. Not a big deal actually. Again, congratulations on your effort!

Re: Obarun feedback thread

yes you're right, i go to created 2 version : one full and one minimal.
when you are on another computer that your, it's very useful to have all you need to work, so...
a another solution is to have addons (like ctkarch). i think it's the solution because it's combined the minimal and full version. but i need to work on it.i think about it since a long time.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

waiting sourceforge to make the iso (the site is ever down)
pstree in progress
tty1 and tty2 in fonction with  vt3 and vt4 in fonction too.
vt3 under user account and vt4 under root account with to different .xinitrc
switching between them is ok now smile  but need work for troubleshooting about working folder environment
RAM USED = 250M, so with 2 tty and one vt RAM USED = 150M
if Xorg isn't under control of Runsv RAM USED = 250M for 2 tty and 0 vt sad
well, i have a strong gain of memory smile

Re: Obarun feedback thread

Excellent work eric! Well done! Your project looks very interesting. Happy to see a lighter version in english.
I just tested the ISO under virtualbox and from the quick look I had I couldn't find any obvious bugs.
I'll have a better look some time later when I'll have some free time (unfortunately I don't have a UEFI pc so I can't test that).
Best of luck to you and your new project, keep up the good work!

Re: Obarun feedback thread

@xtremyst thank for your interest smile

please give me  your used RAM on X server and your machine config

well, i'm currently implemented :
the possibility to choose : lvm used or not , dmraid used or not, btrfs used or not.
hibernate fonction (not sure for that)
some services with xorg for choose different graphical environment and demotrate how to work with runit

so i maded a big mistake in the ~/Desktop/install.txt :
edit /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg and make sure that / is a good partition AND do not forgivet to write this : init=/usr/bin/runit-init on the APPEND line in /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg
so the complete line look like this
APPEND root=/dev/sdb2 init=/usr/bin/runit-init rw
replace sdb2 of your / partition

one thing more
it lacks the configuration files named config in /var/log/socklog/*/config
the file look like this :

s250000
n3
-*
+auth.*
+authpriv.*

and do :

# chown root:root /var/log/socklog/auth/config

another example for daemon directory :

s250000
n3
-*
+daemon.*

etc etc for all the subfolders in /var/log/socklog/
see this http://smarden.org/socklog/examples.html for more informations

if you want to update the system with yySyua (yaourt -Ssyua) and that pacman asks systemd for a particular package, do this

pacman -S packet_to_install --assume-installed systemd

be careful when you do this, you need to known what do you make smile.

good news! the infection of systemd is Eradicated.

well some packages was rebuilded without support of systemd :

xorg-server-common
xorg-server-xephyr
xorg-server-xnest
xorg-server-devel
xorg-server-xdmx
xorg-server-xvfb
xorg-server-xwayland

libsystemd-standalane don't used anymore. libinput is eradicated too (THE trojan of archlinux tongue)

need several test before make a new release of Obarun, but i think it coming soon. i need to change somes things in the mkarchiso but it's in progress

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello,

you can find here http://obarun-linux.zz.mu/src/runit-obarun/ runit-obarun. based on void-runit but with some modifications.(pkgbuild follow)
some writes are changed on files 1, some services more. it's a package base of obarun , modifications on the makefile for be more closer of archlinux's structure. enjoy it smile

release v0.4 in construction for fhe final iso. (somes hours i think)

next move, share the tarball for the new ${pkgname}-nosystemd (xorg, mesa, xf86..., libinput.....qt5......) used on release v0.4

Re: Obarun feedback thread

RELEASE v0.4 here : http://obarun-linux.zz.mu/download.html

It's a major release with a complete disparition of Systemd's support. The previous release had some "fake" of libsystemd. It's not the case anymore. /usr/lib/ is completly free of libsystemd. /var/lib/systemd /usr/lib/systemd /etc/systemd are erased. A lot of package has been rebuild to prevent to use Systemd like xorg-server mesa xf86-video-nouveau lvm2 and much more.

Some working behaviour were rectified to be more stability

i think i have a good base to work with arch without this F**** Systemd

i hope that you will enjoy it smile

i make a pause about iso. the site need work. i would like to implement a page to share all ${pkgname}-nosystemd's PKGBUILD working on obarun. (some problem with the format with my F**** server sad).

ps: a moderator of archlinux.org forum tell me that i wear nothing to the community. Well tell me it's the case..... smile

complete rewrite of files 1

Eric, I don't wish to be unkind, but your 1 file looks a lot like the void 1 with verbatim chunks of void's core-services pasted in. Many of the other files are identical.

I don't think anyone really objects to the void code and the license was really simple. Changing the structure a bit and altering the license might end up being a bit negative.

The main void developer has previously shown an unhelpful attitude towards others that 'made use' of his open source code so perhaps it would be a good idea to keep the original license and add to it rather than eliminate the original author.

Just embedding code into one file will make it harder to see exactly what you contributed during the rewrite and will inhibit transfer of ideas should void make changes; the original sourcing mechanism was quite a clean way to split up the various chunks of shell code that needed to be executed at system startup.

It's nice to see some individual effort and I will try out the new release.

Just embedding code into one file will make it harder to see exactly what you contributed during the rewrite and will inhibit transfer of ideas should void make changes; the original sourcing mechanism was quite a clean way to split up the various chunks of shell code that needed to be executed at system startup.

It's nice to see some individual effort and I will try out the new release.

you're right, i will change my phrase.
however it's a opensource scripts. if the author isn't happy it's not my problem. if he wants to keep his script for him, he must change its license. Moreover, in a readme i keep and i give the original author.
this is the readme

This is based to the void-runit package : https://github.com/voidlinux/void-runit.
Otherwise the structure of the directory is little different and more closer to Archlinux.
The init system is completly reorganized and the directory core-services is erased.
The script modules-load is not available anymore because is made in conjonction with rc.conf.
Some services are added.

I think I am right in my right. but may be i make a mistake. if is the case i'm sorry and i will change the things that cause trouble

edit

i never said: "it's my script". that and is not my spirit. i would like to work to and for the community of archlinux and FREE opensource

in all my pkgbuild i keep the original author AND the contributor. but if i understand correctly the license i can place my name as maintainer of the modified package(if i don't make a mistake). i don't erased the author, i repeat is not my attitude spirit. smile

i modified my index.html for my site.

Obarun is a complete graphical environment under openbox coming with some basic program like an image viewer, a text editor... and some others programs.

The project has started due of the difficulties to maintain a stable system with systemd. Yes, Obarun don't use Systemd. Systemd is completly replaced by Runit. Futhermore, the init system started during booting was reorganized for Obarun. So it is inspired by void-runit, ignite, runit-for-lfs.

The goal of Obarun is to demonstrate an alternative at people that looking after more simplicity and transparency to maintain their systems. Obarun is not dedicated to beginner onto linux but it can be used easily with some basic knowledge. Obarun is completely configured to start and run without intervention.
You just need to burn the iso on USB stick or you can use it under Virtualbox.

One more, Obarun is not a distribution, is not Archlinux. Obarun is based on archlinux but with several changes.
Obarun is only available on x86_64 architecture.

i have link to the proper author of package used and modified. I'm not to make a "vampirisme". i'm here just for loud : "Hey guys, wake up. We need to make better than Systemd. Sysinit need a sucessor not a replacement".
i will share all my job : pkgbuild, construction of the iso means architecture files.....a complete wiki to explain how to make the same things from start to end.
i known it miss a footer page on my site with the copyright for linus and archlinux. Working on it.

but Guys smile i'm alone and the english is not my language. i will try to learn it (english and linux).

mrgreen wrote:

if i understand correctly : yes, sure, put it smile
i go to make a link for your page on my site.

So, everybody, if your knownledge about the license is more than mine and that you see a mistake. tell me directly please. i will change it.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

I am technically using void runit under Springlinux without very little modification. Would prefer to make changes to make it more arch specific (something I will do in time). Some of the core services need changing or removing.

Void runit does state author has waived rights, as scripts are based on ignite (built for archlinux originally)

Have thought open source was about freedom, slowly changing my opinion....

WARNING!!!
a big mistake has been made on eudev-libgudev package. I forgot to implement the hook in the PKGBUILD. Result, impossible to make the udev's hook when the kernel is updated. So sorry, for that.

if you have downloaded the iso before 2015/08/07 Don't update the system without upgrade the eudev-libgudev package. you can find here http://www.obarun-linux.zz.mu/src/eudev … pkg.tar.xz

after this date the iso was rebuild and upgraded to the site with the correct version of the eudev-libgudev package

for the human... yes sure it's more readable. For the disk during the boot proceed, i'm not sure. i thought about it during a long time before integrete all the *.sh in one file and, if i don't make a mistake, the sequence of the file *.sh is not necessary in the same order on the disk.
i'm not sure about that but i think it's better to have a one file for the rapidity. obviously this does not significantly change the time of boot processing

In fact the ordering is made by the numbers; many utilities uses this technique. If you want to change the order in a single file you have to move the text around. If you want to change the order in the *.sh mode you just change the number at the beginning. Keeping the rest of the file name the same at least allows others to understand  what you are doing. There is a negligible speed advantage in using one file, but comparing with other similar systems becomes harder.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

You might consider backgrounding scripts, this will allow scripts too run at once. Mileage might vary but I do notice system stops on some of the services for a short period of time. Creating one file is the way I was going to go, but allowing or having a system of control meant editing a key file.

One example is swap I never use swap on my systems.

Not too mention the virtualisation (lxc) stuff.

if for this reason that i allow or not some part to "boot" or not in the rc.conf. if you want to disable the swap (or lvm for example) you can. but need to reboot to apply the change.

PKGBUILD is on line smile

you find here http://obarun-linux.zz.mu/package/mainPackage.html all the package that i had rebuild for obarun.

please, feel free to criticize if you find something wrong or with a not proper construction, etc....

take careful with qt5, it take a few time to build. under i3 4330, 8GHz Ram , 2 hours.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

Interesting I would have done something similar with '1' script only was going to use functions

file_systems(){
msg "Mounting pseudo-filesystems and load CGroups..."
mountpoint -q /proc || mount -o nosuid,noexec,nodev -t proc proc /proc
mountpoint -q /sys || mount -o nosuid,noexec,nodev -t sysfs sys /sys
mountpoint -q /run || mount -o mode=0755,nosuid,nodev -t tmpfs run /run
mountpoint -q /dev || mount -o mode=0755,nosuid -t devtmpfs dev
mkdir -p -m0755 /run/runit /run/lvm /run/user /dev/pts /dev/shm
mountpoint -q /dev/pts || mount -o mode=0620,gid=5,nosuid,noexec -n -t devpts devpts /dev/pts
mountpoint -q /dev/shm || mount -o mode=1777,nosuid,nodev -n -t tmpfs shm /dev/shm
}

console_setup(){
msg "Console setup"
TTYS=${TTYS:-12}

if [ -n "$FONT" ]; then
    msg "Setting up TTYs font to '${FONT}'..."

    _index=0
    while [ ${_index} -le $TTYS ]; do
        setfont ${FONT_MAP:+-m $FONT_MAP} ${FONT_UNIMAP:+-u $FONT_UNIMAP} \
                $FONT -C "/dev/tty${_index}"
        _index=$((_index + 1))
    done
fi
}

# and so on
# then create a main menu of functions

file_systems
console_setup

Can see you have made full use of rc.conf for startup items that may not be required by user such as 'swap'

Re: Obarun feedback thread

I downloaded obarun_x86_64v0.4.iso from http://obarun-linux.zz.mu/download.html but the checksum doesn't match (tried twice)

$ md5sum obarun_x86_64v0.4.iso
39d5645d7a1b825fa22ebaf94ea01dbe  obarun_x86_64v0.4.iso

$ cat obarun_x86_64v0.4.md5
11a15b1c51bb45743ff9d6f056d7bc78

Which one is correct?

Re: Obarun feedback thread

I had the same problem several times. In the end I had to use wget with a -c option to continue the download. In the end it worked and  checked using the hash stored in the md5 and password zip which is easier to download. The .mu domain is Mauritius which probably has only limited bandwidth.

Have joined and am waiting now too, according too page you get a 2gb limit which is more than enough for me. Once GitHub confirms it will be easy to upload, they are treated like normal commits.

If it does work it would save a lot a pain from using source forge.

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello,

runit-obarun-0.2 package

This package was reorganized in 2 parts. Obarun-boot-0.1 for the boot system, runit-obarun.pkg.tar.xz for Runit. Runit-obarun depend of obarun-boot and is based on arch-runit package with little modifications.
For the moment you need to download manualy obarun-boot.tar.xz before build runit-obarun. Some problems seems corrupt the file when it's downloaded by runit-obarun PKGBUILD. Working on it.

the package is online here : http://obarun-linux.zz.mu/src/runit-obarun/

many thank at replabrobin for the arch-runit packages smile.

no need anymore for me. the new package is more closer of arch structure than void package. i added the features for zsh-completion too(runit-musl). very usefull.

modifications for arch-runit :

-patch void-runit erased
-ln -s ../etc/runit/runsvdir/current "$pkgdir/var/service" #??? becomes ln -s ../run/runit/runsvdir/current "$pkgdir/var/service".
-source file is runit and obarun-boot(replace void-runit)

modifications about obarun-boot
-file _sv added on obarun-boot (zsh completion)

this is normal. obarun-boot is a boot script, a repo was created only for it. it's a source file, not a package.
it's a choice. i need to work on it and i prefer keep the source available easily for see differences apply, make a branch etc..
i would like to let the choice using another package than obarun-runit for control it.

may be, with the time, a package can created....

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello,

good news, LVM support at boot time is fully operationnal. Socket already is use for lmvetad.
-lvm2_hook on lvm2 package was changed
-obarun-boot have a new features on it : a directory boot-extra was created for specials behaviour at boot time (lvmetad for example)

this is not available for the moment on site obarun and github
i would like to make new packages like rtkit-nosystemd, udisks2-nosystemd. after that i make an obarun iso v0.4.1 to fix a little bug like locale and implement new packages.

it will be available as soon as possible smile

Re: Obarun feedback thread

hello,

obarun-boot-v0.2 is online on github. tags was created on this repository
runit-obarun was updated according to this.

new features see post before. lvm2_hook was reinitialized to the origin : better for maintaining package.

work on obarun-iso-v0.4.1. i think at week-end, it will be available

next move : create a Forum on my site. i don't want to "pollute" so much this so sympathic archbang forum. it's time to me to stop this smile .
