New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

You can register again

We made a sort of filter against spammers.

Just register as new member: you will become registering member; that means you won't be able to post until you send an e-mail to:

archbangforums at gmail dot com

In that e-mail you have to convince me you are not a spammer by making an Arch(Bang) related remark or just offer the post you are proposing to write so I know you are serious.

And I'll promote you to ordinary member with posting rights.

Edit 6 December 2013: We are trying a more easy procedure with captcha's and so on; if this turns out well, we'll keep it that way...

Anyway you don't have to send an email for the time being.

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

No, it was not working, just  deleted two brand new users.
Have created registering member group with no posting rights as default group.
People first  have to register there and prove they are not a spammer.
They should have some content related remark about Archbang.

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

I've seen forums that needs moderator's actions to make a user to be active.

Has FluxBB a "total of posts" plugin?
I mean, a moderator have to approve, lets say 5 posts to make a new user active

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

We thought we did not have forum control until recently. Very wary of making changes that could affect or damage forums as they are now. We on a daily basis delete spam posts and users. Last couple of days a new more aggressive tactic is being used. Random user names and email addresses all posting a single spam post. This means we have more work to do to remove them. This morning I alone have removed 20+ users. Even with turning of registration the spam continues.

As we are a very small team at ArchBang it does spoil the whole forum for all of our regular and new users alike.

Most of the email addresses of these random users are @hotmail ...

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

There are some mods for fluxBB that would be interesting to use:

1. Very simple anti-bot registration
2. anti-spam mod

The 1st ask for answer a question like "What is two plus two?"
The 2nd has a "hidden" password field (that users should know before registration)

I don't know how these mods works. I don't know if they are compatible with our forum version.

In other hand: I know I'm really new in this community, but If you (all team) agree, I propose lend you a hand to keep the forum clean.

I already have moderation skills. Since 2007
I'm a super-moderator at preguntaslinux.org (the argentinian cousin of linuxquestion.org)
It would be a pleasure to collaborate.

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

Over at Spiralinear.org we'd been running an invite only membership due to spam. Then the spammers managed to get through that, so we've only just changed to new forum software (Vanilla) which apparently has much more powerful anti-spam options.

We'll see how that pans out...

FluxBB 1.5.1 is loaded and ready to unpack but I don't feel I have enough experience to confidently update the Forum without worrying about crashing the Forum.

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

Well, the forums are working OK and I haven't deleted or seen new spammers after I have have changed the default group to registering members; so this spam wall is working.
A semi functional forum would be a lot worse.
I didn't know Mr. Green was removing so much spammers; but this solution also is workable.

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

Unfortunately a spammer could grep one of the old posting and email it.   However, most spammers don't know about AB and linux.  You could setup a questionaire (10 questions???) like

1.
Who wrote linux
a. Richard Stallman
b. Eric Raymond
c. Alan Cox
d. Linus Torvald
e. others

2. ....

I.e, write questions that a typical ABer would easily know 8 out of 10, but most spammers would fail to pass.

Make sure one of the questions is. Should we 'suck' off Microsoft? 1000 word essay on why or why not.

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

No, if people just pose a content related question about AB or Arch it is good enough for me.
And I am the gatekeeper for now.
But amazing how much people don't get that simple proposition and come with a general remark that any spammer could have written.

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

Would like to upgrade forum, only I am not that confident in what I am doing and the thought of losing posts. On the flip side it solve many issues we have with registration.

As I mentioned earlier, it is easy to copy-and-paste an old AB forum post.

But they are not able to discuss AB issue.   Maybe the way to go is to post their question on the IRQ channel or email exchange and force new users to discuss their problems (chat back and forth).
Spammers won't be able to do this.

Re: New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums

I think the method we are using works. If a user cannot be bothered to answer a simple question, then it will be difficult to get information needed to help them on our forums should the need arise.

As I mentioned earlier, it is easy to copy-and-paste an old AB forum post.

Until now I wasn't fooled that way and as I have quite a good memory that would probably fail anyway.
