Forgive my ignorance, but couldn't find exactly what I am looking for over and above the obvious, but what exactly is the difference between the two once AB has been installed? As far as I can see, the only difference is in the installation process. Am I right?

Archbang is based on Arch, but yes once installed you are running Arch Linux...

Thanks, that is great news. I really am loving the Arch experience and am a firm convert. No going back now.

Basically, ArchBang hand picks a bunch of packages so that you get X and openbox on install, which is nice if that is your end destination. It is something you could do yourself from the standard Arch install, only with much more fiddling.
Word of warning - don't mention Arch Bang if you ask a question on the Arch forums or you'll get a slapdown.

Basiclly openbox + few apps and diff installer, I've just learned that custom configutration of archbang may give rise to problems unrelated to arch, but still, having running both for a time and, I treat both systems the same way as if they are arch, you still have to pay attention to any announcement in arch and archbang pages, before big updates!!

As far as trying to prevent any trouble before using pacman/packer/yaourt & such is concerned; -
I not too long ago started using pacmatic, http://kmkeen.com/pacmatic/index.html doing so adds a few seconds at most to my daily upgrades though it is well worth it for the very useful info' that it gives when needed. I wish I'd known about it a long time ago.
I call it (with nice) using the alias paur from my ~/.bashrc as follows:
### packer using pacmatic & nice with -Syu:
alias paur="PACMAN=pacmatic nice packer -Syu"The above alias allows me to use packer & pacmatic together.
Pacmatic, tells you of the most recent chatter on the arch mailing list like this:
handy ~ $ paur
Password:
Recent ML chatter: bluez(10), perl(5), linux(2)
:: Synchronizing package databases...Then before it does any packages from AUR it notifies you if there are any .pacnew files & offers to merge them. (I always check out the .pacnew files in my own way though.):
1 pacnew files found (1 added). Update files now? (Y/n)
It really is well worth a look, & it truly does work like a charm.
Actually, I think it should be incorporated into the ArchBang .iso. ![]()

I still have not asked over there but, if I dare, I suppose I should behave as a "regular" Arch user. Right?

I remember a few months ago I was having trouble configuring the WiFi when using the standard Arch installation (before I had discovered Archbang) and I got slapped down because I was asking too many questions. It was a bit intimidating. I have since learnt to do as much research as possible first. I know it takes a lot of time and it's easier to ask the experts, but at least it made me patient. It took me six reinstalls to get up and running and I am delighted.

It not the question that is the problem, most issues related to Arch can be solved by searching Arch Forums or reading up wiki.
We all had to start somewhere [that includes me!]

Yes, that has definitely happened to me also, and quite a few times over the last year or so, welcome aboard. I admit, I deserved it sometimes. - lol
But I guess that also explains another difference between "Archbang vs Arch".
Archbang Forum is much more friendly, tolerant... than the Arch forum ![]()
... that is, with my experience here.
I mean, can you just imagine the shit-kicking I would get if posted this on the Arch forum ("Newbie Corner") right now ?. ![]()
Ha ha ha.

The Arch community expects you to check out the wiki & the forum first.
The ArchBang community would really like you to do the same. ![]()

Hello!
Yes but they do have time to read your post and then slap you down, it is a stupid behaviour for me, if what they want is more independent users, they should just ignore your post if they are not going to help anyway!
Or just post a link to the forum rules, and nothing more, of course also other users should not post anything like read the rules etc, if someone has posted that before, moderators should take kare of the rest (relocating posts, deleting, etc)
I posted this same article in arch also (and in chakra):
http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?id=2490
Here none of you answered, and its fine it makes me think none of you had had the same problem or you just don't know or don't have the time to help. (in chakra none answered either)
but in arch forums I got about 7 slaps by different people, and I was just trying to explain myself (spanish is my native language), and they keept slaping lol!! why oh why if they are not helping they just poluted my post and soon it was deleted, I know I can't judge the entire community for just a few, but I can see heard behaviour over there when it comes to things like this, they where mad because I was asking there for something in archbang, it is idiotic for me that people don't understand, I posted it here, no one hlped, of course I posted there, they must have much more people and not openbox centric, so I thought it would be helpful, but Ok i installed arch after several tries over archbang, same problems, another post, now I don't know if they just ignored me lol, because they seemed upset.
Yes I red the forum rules, no other distros asking ok! what ever as if archbang wasn't based in arch! is not as if I'm asking about debian, and a off topic sub forum would have been enough (they moved my post first to a similar sub forum, then I edited the conntents, and then they deleted it, how dumb is that?) but banning other distros seems too harsh for me
Any way I mannaged to install chakra finally in that PC everyting ok now!
Have a nice day

It very unlikely anyone is going to take any notice of your arch problems in Off Topic.
Am sorry that you have had problems on forums and with Archbang, we do try to help people when we can.

@IsmaelVC
Regarding: "http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?id=2490"
Archbang, is all about Arch+Openbox, it's not "about" KDE !
Therefore, maybe you are better off in the "Arch-KDE" forums than you are here.
#..., pacman -S kde-meta and it's done, play around with a few tweaks/configs and it should be ok.
I gave up on KDE after 3.5*
Nowadays, I will run Chakra, (as you said), before I will run Arch+KDE.
-anyway,
It would be like me complaining about Debian/KDE on a "Crunchbang" forum. ?!
I hope you understand.![]()

FWIW, my post in the Arch forums mentioning Bridge Linux (an Arch-based distro that offers pre-set configuration options) was quickly moved from Installation to Off Topic. The explanation was that Bridge Linux is an "installation helper like Archbang".
I had thought it would be helpful for Arch users to know that there are ways to achieve a quick and painless Arch installation if you don't have time to go through the config yourself. I've been using Arch for seven years and have installed it many times, but recently I needed to install Arch in a hurry. Bridge Linux let me do just that, and I suspect Archbang would have, as well.
I think the Arch forum mods are trying to keep the forum focused on the essential Arch experience of installing from scratch, editing config files, etc. I might suggest that they open a section for Arch-based distros or other sorts of Arch derivatives to accommodate Archbang, Bridge and other distros that yield an Arch system. As things stand, it's almost as if you shouldn't expect support on the Arch forum if your spouse or a friend installed your system for you!
