For some reason my mouse cursor will disappear when hovering over a lot of stuff, and the mouse cursor will just disappear until I move it again, which is extremely annoying as it's hard to see where the mouse is.
A list of things it disappears on:
- Openbox menu
- Google Chrome tabs and hyperlinks
- Flash player (YouTube)
- Tint2 (or near the bottom of the screen in general)
- rxvt-unicode
I have changed my cursor theme to DMZ (black) theme.
It happens regardless of whether or not any compositing effects are on.
EDIT: Added rxvt

What did you alter in the default Openbox configuration; did you install a different mouse cursor theme?
Did/does the error occur working on the liveCD?

I haven't changed the openbox config, I added the cursor theme through the user interface settings

dumb question, but did you happen to install 'unclutter'?
Welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, well. To what do I owe the extreme pleasure of this surprising visit?

No I didn't sorry

No need to apologise... it's just that I like the behaviour you're describing and I install 'unclutter' to accomplish it :-)

Why not reinstate your original cursor theme and see if that solves the problem?

I'm not sure how, my new theme is the only thing that shows in the "User Interface settings" panel, I'm not sure how to revert to the default.

Post your .Xdefaults file

It is very strange that you only see your current theme; have you been deleting theme files?
Have you gone to the mouse tab? To check you mouse cursor theme, maybe it is (partially) deleted?
And do you understand that there is a difference between the wm theme and the mouse cursor theme?
You don't get errors like described from changing the wm theme, the theme you see on the widget tab of lxappaerance.
Install a cursor theme like
#pacman -S xcursor-premium
and activate it to see if this solves your problems.
Found very green cursors for Mr. Green http://www.limitland.de/pics/flatbedcursors2.png:
#pacman -S xcursor-flatbed

I didn't see the default theme before even changing it, while it was even activated, and I haven't been deleting them.
I'll try installing the theme like you described and see if it solves it.
EDIT: I installed and activated the xcursor-premium cursor theme and am still getting the same problem.
EDIT2: As per request, here is my .Xdefaults http://pastebin.com/8yqNVJ8P

Add a new user and then log in see if it works, I never tried changing cursor theme so cannot really be of any more help.

I added a new user and tried to recreate the problem, but I couldn't! Even if I changed the cursor theme the problem wasn't happening at all! Must be something to do with the settings on my account specifically then...

I am not sure but check your .gtkrc-2.0 [gtk settings] long shot, could be a rouge desktop file setting

The only difference between the cursor of the test user I set up and the cursor of my user account is that the test one has a different font selected.

I am having the same issue as the OP. It also happens for Firefox, but the flickering doesn't seem to start until one of the programs listed is started. I noticed that it started happening when I was fooling around with some gtk themes and possibly theme engines. I still have not found a solution and was wondering if anyone else was able to solve this issue.

I posted this thread on the Archlinux forums too and got no solutions or helpful responses

Ok I figured out how to fix this. I fooled around and found out that my cursor issues started right after I installed the xcursor-vanilla-dmz package. I uninstalled the mouse cursor themes and this seemed to solve my problem. I guess that means that I won't be able to use any xcursor themes though.

How did you go about uninstalling the cursor themes?

Well I knew the name of the cursor scheme that I downloaded. So pacman -R cursor-theme-name

....there are many screwy cursor themes. I downloaded many of them and went through quite a few of them a while ago. Not all cursor themes are kosher, lots of buggy crap from my experience. You are not locked in using just the themes from the repos. I have installed cursor themes from KDE.org and elsewhere. There are loads of cursor themes available, just need to search for them, download the ones you like and go through them. Weed out the ones that are buggy and keep the ones that are not. I'll post a few link to some sites later...after I locate them again. Read the page Mr. Green posted a link to in this thread to know how to setup/configure the cursor themes.
Create a ~/.icons/default/ directory:
$ mkdir -p ~/.icons/defaultCreate a ~/.icons/default/index.theme file:
touch ~/.icons/default/index.themeadd the following to ~/.icons/default/index.theme file:
[icon theme]
Inherits=foobarecho ' [icon theme] ' >> ~/.icons/default/index.theme
echo 'Inherits=foobar' >> ~/.icons/default/index.themeYou would obviously substitute the actual Cursor Theme name for "foobar" in the above.
