Kernel panic during phase 3; minor annoyance with cfdisk [solved]

I just posted about how impressed I am with archbang.

But I run into a kernel panic every time I try to install it and ditch the livecd. Tried about 4 times. md5sum-ed the cd. (which by the way would have saved me 15 minutes if it had been possible from the cd itself... - yes, I'm complaining now. It's only one more line to the menu, and would add some more awesome to arch! If you don't mind some feedback)

Somewhere at about 9%... of the 3rd step "Install system", I get stuck. What are my options ? I really hope we can circumvent this...

Also, my logical partitions are not in order, thus cfdisk (if i remember right) returns an error and that's it. Maybe you'd like to know that but, being that my hdd is already partitioned I don't need it anyway. Just thought I'd let you know.

Now that my specs are in the open could anyone tell me whether I get at least a drop of performance more out of my box with your i686 optimized packages, taking into account the above, that is that I'm running a celeron box with 512 ram ?

it might be worth trying to launch the installer via a terminal so any obvious errors will be shown there

sudo /usr/bin/abinstall

I think any performance gains will be from using a lightweight window manager over a fully-fledged desktop environment rather than the actual packages being optimized for i686

If your going to add packages or remove some for others make sure what your installing uses the least dependencies and least ram. And of course whichever browser you choose disable web caching to ram.

Given the fact that I'm an openbox addict already, I'm excited about what arch brings to the table. I guess I'll see. If I ever get it running...

I may be being overly pedantic (whats new?) but the window manager only defines how the apps look and feel (decorations, how to resize etc). The desktop environment (like XFCE/Gnome/KDE) take a window manager and build upon it by integrating a suite of apps... so when you get a calendar request via email, it shows up when you click on the clock in the bottom right hand corner for example. Obviously, if you run Gnome and have no interest in calendaring, it's a wasted process sat there eating cycles.

OB (and Arch) have the philosophy of starting with the necessities and building up which is much better (IMO) than installing everything and stripping down.

Ooops... I wasn't sure if the urxvt window would disappear before you could see the error or not but you've confirmed not

Do you get the same error if you just install to one partition ( / ) and swap (assuming you have multiple partitions)?

If install is getting stuck at 9% you need to check the drive/partition you are installing too [maybe mount points and filesystems as well]

You have not given us your hardware specs only whats on you motherboard

Well if it's of anyhelp, I mounted the file system and found nothing except for lost+found.
I guess something happens when archbang tries to write to it ?
I checked the partition with fsck, forced. I ran badblocks on it. Before registering on the forums. It's clean.
I installed another distro succesfully just the other day.

Mountpoints are fine. I have another 2 distributions on the disk so I need to be careful not to wipe my data. I'm not installing to more than one partition, which is the quite default /dev/sda1 by the way.

In case you need hardware info, ask.

I wish I was able to try archbang-2011.10-i686, but there no links. ... maybe that has a different older kernel ? How do I circumvent the kernel ? is there a nightly build or something with a newer kernel ?

Is md5sum failsafe ? Could it be that I got the right numbers despite erros ?... then again, brasero checks things against the iso byte-for-byte.

Help ! I'm stuck ! I've been searching for syncing all morning...

Ok. forget the above. It's a permission problem. I can't copy onto my partition. I just created an ext4 and ext3 partition and can't copy onto it except if I'm root. Something about su instead of sudo when formating ?

I do not understand this. I changed the owner of the partition to live. I guess it'll work now.
But wasn't sudo /usr/bin/abinstall pretending to be root? I could write to my partition as root. Why doesn't it this script claim ownership of this partition and do whatever it needs to?... I didn't even crossed my mind that it can have permission problems while super...

Sorry. My fault. Here's what happened.

Because I have too many partitions (which made cfdisk complain, as mentioned) I just didn't see the DONE under /dev/sda6 /dev/sda7... so when asked to set up other partitions I pressed CANCEL. Instead of DONE.

I think I was sort of miss led by the question: do you want to set up other partitions (or something like that) while I saw: OK/CANCEL... and a list of partitions above.

Now that I saw the script doing what it's doing, I now see that abinstall never got the opportunity to format /dev/sda1 at all...

Maybe the script could be a tad more idiot-proof ? Like not starting to go about deflating without having a partition to deflate to ? Returning an error instead of allowing for a kernel panic ?... Just asking.

Also, maybe ABORT instead of CANCEL would be more apropriate... maybe.

Also, I'd just like to say, that now that I've installed A! I can answer my question.
YES A! is clearly faster and snappier than anything I've used before. There is a SIGNIFICANT change. I'm surprised to see my computer respond it real time, which is an amazing feeling

Anyone who says they don't feel any difference in speed or responsiveness has a computer that is too new.

So, congrats to whoever is behind this project, you are doing an extraordinary job

I'm got the same kernel panic on my current arch system booted from HDD. It appeared after trying to install Archbang on my 16GB-SD-card, from which I booted other distros in the past. (My specs: EEE-PC 1000H, 1,6 GHz Atom, 1GB RAM).

Additionally it appears everytime booting from an Archbang live cd and trying to install it on my 160GB HDD or my SD-Card.

(My last problem - freezing up with an uncompress error at 6% - is now solved by choosing a live CD instead of an live USB stick.)

Now every installation progress I'm starting from live CD stops at 9% with this kernel error. I really don't know what to do, because I can't imagine why this error appears even if I format the whole HDD and the SD-Card. And why did it appeared on my installed system, too?

Installing Ubuntu 11.10 - I just found a burned CD of it - worked well. But ...

I don't think so, because EDID the mechanism by which the X server gets the monitor size.

Are you sure your install image is good? I.e. did you md5sum it?

Downloaded it several times and checked it with md5sum.

I just installed Chakra Linux to have something to work on. It runs well, but not quite what I hoped to create.

At the moment I'm a bit busy so I will try downloading and installing Archbang (at first only on my SD-Card) on the weekend again.

The error at 9% was because xz had no partition to deflate to (as far as i remember). Now I looked for "error code 9" at http://tukaani.org/xz/ to no avail. Do other distros use xz to install themselves ? What if xz simply doesn't like your hardware (IDE controler)? So maybe we could look at the installer code and see what exactly goes wrong at that 9% and maybe replace xz with another extraction utility and see what error code they return ?

If xz is the problem this could be a good solution. Is it possible to run the installer from another Arch based system?

So maybe I could install an Arch based distro on my SD-Card to run a modified installer script from there to install ArchBang on my HDD. But where to get the installer script? Anyone an idea? I will search for it.

Any suggestions which extraction utility will fit as an alternative?

Maybe what I'm saying is nonsense but I read that dd was originally written for taped devices, that no SD card. Also since it only happens with Archbang maybe it's something specific.

the installer is located in /usr/bin/abinstall and if you mount look in the iso you should be able to find it.

But i don't understand this part: But why did the error appear on my succesfully installed ArchLinux system after trying to install ArchBang on another drive?
