Next generation of PCManFM-Mod is called SpaceFM

ANNOUNCEMENT 2012-01-15: The next generation of PCManFM-Mod is called SpaceFM – now available for early testing. Except for possible bugfixes, v1.2.4 is the final release of PCManFM-Mod. All further development will be in the SpaceFM project. You can read more about the changes here:
SpaceFM: How And Why http://igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/01/ … w-and-why/

And http://spacefm.sourceforge.net/

Spacefm is experimental, especially in the UI department. This is not your typical file manager, at least in some ways. There are enough of those that work well, so I wanted to get more creative with it. I always hear from users how they want things their way, and I do too! So I wanted a UI that was very flexible, and also had a good memory for remembering and allowing user options and settings. To give you an idea, pcmanfm remembers about 20 settings or so in its config file. A typical spacefm config file remembers about 1000 settings, and that number only gets higher as you add custom commands and customize parts of the program. spacefm remembers just about everything in terms of preferred dialog sizes, program options, menu options, fonts, icons, etc. (If it forgets something you want it to remember, let me know – this is one of the key design aspects.) This design blurs the line between development and use – in using spacefm you are the developer of your own version of it, and you can make it look and work quite uniquely. As you use it, it begins to change and conform to your uses, sort of like a baseball glove that breaks in with use. It’s up to you to decide if I achieved this, but that was the idea. It can seem a little unusual at first though, like a new baseball glove, so give it a chance to break in.

Any screenshots? Or does it look just like PCManFM?

As said it is very configurable, so a screen shot will only give a very limited impression.

Re: Next generation of PCManFM-Mod is called SpaceFM

I had not tried pcmanfm-mod yet, so I just jumped in with spacefm.  Looks good.  Can set your wallpaper (recall pcmanfm-mod could as well) and has a search (i.e., catfish replacement).  My only issue was getting the open as root functions to work.  As I have said before, probable user error.  I will keep trying.

At first I did not think you could copy or move from panel to panel.  Upon fooling around I found it under Edit from a right click.

Is it too early to add SpaceFM to Archbang package list?

What is the size of the package? That will be the deciding factor for Will.

Re: Next generation of PCManFM-Mod is called SpaceFM

That's the installed size and not the size of the package. Unfortunately, pacman 4.0 doesn't show the size of the package anymore sad  I found it on the spacefm sourceforge page and the tar.xz size is 748.1KB which is bigger than 140.7KB for pcmanfm.

That is not a completely fair comparison.  In theory you could get rid of other packages needed for catfish and nitrogen as search and wallpaper settings are functions of what comes with spacefm.  I am guessing that spacefm is still bigger, but is substantially more functional?

Re: Next generation of PCManFM-Mod is called SpaceFM

More functional and better in a lot of ways. There's also a lot to be said for pcmanfm's simplicity as well which makes it easy to use and less complicated. It's up to Will. If he were to include it he can save some .iso space by using file-roller instead of xarchiver as file-roller has no dependencies now.

I just installed it on my Gentoo system (version 0.5.4) through the sunrise overlay as it's classified as a new ebuild and not officially in x11-misc yet. I also get spacefm search files option on my menu list. I need to look again to see the path and add it to my OB menu.

Looks nice smile Maybe I should move away from Thunar. Still using it from ArchBang 2011.10.

Re: Next generation of PCManFM-Mod is called SpaceFM

By adding a new item SpaceFM Search Files and this command to your OB menu:

spacefm --find-files %F

you can add a SpaceFM search for files and folders option GUI. big_smile

Re: Next generation of PCManFM-Mod is called SpaceFM

Looks nice really... Is it able to draw desktop?
It might be good replacement for nautilus  (currently the only option for me).
Definitely will give it a try.

UPD: Tried it out.  So far so good - it works just fine. No more question about desktop - found a pref tab (but have not tried yet).
At first it feels a little unusual concerning where to find what, (but I think after some time it probably turns out to be more convenient than some other FMs).
Not everything is clear yet.  (the project definitely needs some more help/documentation!)
So far I couldn't understand the logic of switch with green ball - right from the main menu, neither how to customize look-and-feel: I saw two quite different screenshots above. Announcement said  about 1000 parameters - is it $HOME/.config/spacefm/session file?
Also, tools/plugin stuff is completely unclear.
But still - my first impression exceeded the expectations. Well done!

A simple method to backup unmounted partitions with spacefm is described here: http://stillstup.blogspot.com/2012/03/m … acefm.html

IG describes how he uses this always before doing a system update and when it goes wrong he put the backup back. Not a bad habit..

Re: Next generation of PCManFM-Mod is called SpaceFM

Nice file manager, i have some questions:
1- How to open root filemanager and terminal of the current folder?
2- Video previews are supported?
3 - Can i add the same custom actions of thunar?
