Greetings from the Carolinas

Hello to all,

I've been using ArchBang for about two months now and not only do I find it to be a great distro that runs smooth on my system I also love all the support the forums have to offer. I only started using linux as a whole about two years ago with a gentle push from my father-in-law who is pretty much and old school linux jedi. We both love to use distros that are light weight but still have plenty to offer and I think ArchBang is perfect for that. I'm looking forward to using ArchBang for awhile and can't wait to see how far it can go.

Re: Greetings from the Carolinas

Hi, robykel, I am an old guy who loves Linux, too (like your father-in-law, not you). I have a son who goes to school in SC, at Furman U. He uses a Mac, though.

hmmm... old school... likes lightweight... my money is on slackware :-)  Or maybe, at a push, Zenwalk.

Welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, well. To what do I owe the extreme pleasure of this surprising visit?

Re: Greetings from the Carolinas

Ok, so the list I got from my father-in-law on the distros that he chooses for computers he builds for other people, depending on hardware:
Puppy
Slitaz - ran from a 64mb usb stick
Antix
Mepis

He also mentioned doing a net install of debian then picking the software to run for it.

Yea, I lucked up with the whole marriage thing, not only do I have a great wife but her dad just happens to be a systems consultant/architect for a major insurance company. When I can't find an answer to a question in the forums(almost never happens) he is the first person I call.

Lucky on the personal tech support!  I did notice you mentioned the distros he chooses when building hardware for other people.  Just as customize my linux recommendation based on the recipient's potential to get it.  That may not be what he uses.  Have you ever got a peak at his computer?

Re: Greetings from the Carolinas

"His computer" is a loose term, he seems to operate different computers for different uses. I do know at least that his personal preference isn't all that exciting to be honest, he boots debian for the stability and hardware comparability that it offers. He does have a been there done that view for a lot of different distros so I can understand him going with something that doesn't need to be tweaked as much.
