Wrong resolution when booting from Live CD/DVD AB! 2011.10

Hello ArchBanger!

Before installing AB! 2011.10 and booting from Live DVD/CD my resolution was not  that great, it seems as if I was running the Vesa Drirver...I didn't want to do a clean install to find out that my screen resolution was going to stay the same...(not to much time in my hands right now to sit and customized my system).

Well my solution to this "problem" came very quick. This is what I did:

When booting from Live CD/DVD, rather than selecting the first option "Boot ArchBang Linux", I selected "Boot ArchBang Linux [failsafe] which is the second option, by selecting this option, the changes on my screen resolution where noticeable instantly. Then of course I proceeded to do a clean installation of AB! 2011.10.

I hope that this will help you resolve your screen resolution if you experience the same issue I did.

Enjoy AB!

Re: Wrong resolution when booting from Live CD/DVD AB! 2011.10

Oh what actually happened in the background is that I've swapped the boot options on 2011.10 since many Nvidia users would have a messed up screen when letting Xorg 'autodetect' which was the default option before. Now when you select the first option, if you press tab to edit the options, you'll notice that it actually starts in failsafe mode by default which is more logical for a live CD tongue

Re: Wrong resolution when booting from Live CD/DVD AB! 2011.10

Hi
that option did not work for the latest release, still a messed up  screen for Nvidia pcie, and no failsafe boot option in sight.
Left with res of only 1024x768.
Updated the OS and installed kde but at login this kde option is nowhere to be seen, only the default openbox.
Guess it is Nouveau driver or vesa, but resolution maxed out at the above. Not keen to install nvidia drivers.
Problems persist, and I don't dare ask anything on Arch forums.
New to Arch type things, any ideas what to do next gratefully accepted as so far not so good.

Best

Try this to get KDE working: http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?pid=6514#p6514

As far as the nvidia driver goes, I have seen more problems with nvidia than the ati driver and both keep popping up in threads as problems for screen resolution. It has turned me off from trying either. I don't blame you for not asking in Arch Forums unless you DON'T mention ArchBang and post in the Newbie section.

@elzorro

Do you have the same problem I have? I get a "normal" resolution screen with the pixels the right size, but it only displays a 1024x768 screen on the top-left corner, with a black border on the right and on the bottom.

Thanks very much Archvortex,
kde now working, but still stuck with 1024x768 low resolution and not sure what to do.
Guess I will have to keep looking.
cheers

Re: Wrong resolution when booting from Live CD/DVD AB! 2011.10

Have you tried the archbang wiki pages on nvidia and screen resoultion:
installing the right driver and updating xorg
http://wiki.archbang.org/index.php?titl … Mode_Guide   point 4
when there are still problems with resolution: see problem 2
http://wiki.archbang.org/index.php?titl … %27t_Start

Be sure that vesa isn't handling the driver part and install nouveau and be sure it is listed, nouveau at the right places.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-gpudriver.conf. Change the vesa  setting to nouveau if you have installed the nouveau driver.

Re: Wrong resolution when booting from Live CD/DVD AB! 2011.10

Hi, pablokal
I configured Archbang  for nouveau and edited out nomodest in Grub's menu1st a while ago according to the Arch wiki, but this was a disaster with my Nvidia Gforce GT 240  pcie card giving the same mashed up screen as autoconfigure so the driver for this card is not supported in Archbang. I wonder if the firmware is available in Arch, for the Debian based distros and even Debian squeeze all handle this card no bother.
I later put an older Nvidia pcie card in and the desktop came back to life  with 1280x1024 resolution, but rather poor font rendering..
So I wonder how to get firmware for the better card.
Regards
El Zorro

I know this sounds dumb, but I fixed my problem which is similar to yours. Did you change the video driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-gpudriver.conf?

Re: Wrong resolution when booting from Live CD/DVD AB! 2011.10

On this page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HC … _.281GB.29
it says that your video card is well supported by nvidia drivers.
See how to install nvidia driver, with a working xorg server:
http://wiki.archbang.org/index.php?titl … org_Server
This means downgrading your xorg serverto xorg-server-1.10.4-1*.
If you haven't the desired xorg server version in /var/cache/pacman/pkg
use the http://arm.konnichi.com/2011/ site for downloading it.

I recommend to try this solution first: http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?pid=7775#p7775
