#1 Offtopic » Stand with Edward Snowden, save him from being treated as a criminal: » 2013-06-13 02:52:13

Hi all,

This 29 year-old analyst just gave up his whole life -- his girlfriend, his job, and his home -- to blow the whistle on the US government's shocking PRISM program -- which has been reading and recording our emails, Skype messages, Facebook posts and phone calls for years.

When Bradley Manning passed this kind of data to Wikileaks, the US threw him naked into solitary confinement in conditions that the UN called "cruel, inhumane and degrading".

The authorities and press are deciding right now how to handle this scandal. If millions of us stand with Edward in the next 48 hours, it will send a powerful statement that he should be treated like the brave whistleblower that he is, and it should be PRISM, and not Edward, that the US cracks down on:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/stop_prism_fb_a/?tysEsab

PRISM is profoundly disturbing: it gives the US government unlimited access to all of our personal email and social media accounts on Google, Youtube, Facebook, Skype, Hotmail, Yahoo! and much more. They're recording billions of our messages every month and the CIA can now or in the future use the information to prosecute, persecute, or blackmail us, our friends or our families!

Edward was horrified by this unprecedented violation of individual privacy. So he copied large amounts of files, sent them to the Guardian newspaper for publication and escaped to Hong Kong. His bravery not only exposed PRISM, but has started a domino effect around the world, shining a light on secret spy programs in Canada, the UK and Australia in just days! Now he's trapped in Hong Kong, waiting to be arrested. A global outcry could save him from extradition to the US, and encourage other countries to grant him asylum.

We can't let the US do to Edward what they did to Bradley Manning. Let's urgently stand with him, and against PRISM:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/stop_prism_fb_a/?tysEsab

Sometimes the things our governments do are simply breathtaking. When heroic individuals like Edward have risked their own freedoms to bring scandals of this scale into light, the Avaaz community has come together to demand fair treatment -- and won. After more than half a million of us called on the US government to stop its cruel treatment of Bradley Manning, he was relocated to a medium-security prison and taken out of solitary confinement. If we act quickly, we might do better for Edward, and help him win the fight he's bravely taken on, for all our sakes.

With hope and determination,

Ricken, Emma, Oli, Mia, Allison, Ari, Dalia, Laura and the whole Avaaz team

#2 Re: FAQs, Tips & Tutorials » ~/.bashrc - What can/does it do for you? » 2013-06-10 21:42:40

Hi there lebec, thanks for the compliments.

You need to call whichever program you want Openbox to start in the ~/.config/openbox/autostart file, like so:

sakura &

Don't forget to stick the & on the end of the command or your autostart file will stick there.

Doing the above will cause any & all files that open in a window on the desktop, like Firefox, Sakura, whatever file manager & such to open on Desktop 1. All on top of each other.

You can fix this by editing your ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml file. Following is the end of my rc.xml which has control for some files that I am not currently starting in the autostart file. This doesn't matter, rc.xml doesn't care about that.

  # end of the example
-->
    <application class="Qbittorrent">
      <desktop>6</desktop>
    </application>
    <application class="Sakura">
      <desktop>5</desktop>
      <maximized>yes</maximized>
    </application>
    <application class="Terminator">
      <desktop>4</desktop>
      <maximized>yes</maximized>
    </application>
    <application class="Worker">
      <desktop>3</desktop>
      <maximized>yes</maximized>
    </application>
    <application class="Firefox">
      <desktop>1</desktop>
      <maximized>yes</maximized>
      <focus>yes</focus>
    </application>
  </applications>
</openbox_config>

If a file doesn't do what you want it to re. opening on the chosen desktop, then it will be due to its name being wrong. Try upper & lower case for the first letter of the name & such. There is a bash command which will tell you what the name is that you need, but I've forgotten what it is. It can be found somewhere in on the Openbox site. Good luck with finding it in a hurry. wink

Hope that helps.

On seeing your aliases, you can just type alias in the Terminal & get a list, but you don't get any little stories you wrote to go with them. smile

Have fun...

#3 Offtopic » $1 trillion per year corporate tax loophole! » 2013-06-09 19:28:26

Dear friends,

In days, governments will discuss whether to plug a gigantic $1 trillion per year corporate tax loophole - enough money to end poverty, put every child in school, and double green investment! Most governments want powerful multinationals to pay these taxes, but the US and Canada are on the fence. To get a deal, we need them to feel the pressure.

$1 trillion is more than every country combined spends on their military. It's bigger than the budgets of 176 nations. It's $1000 each for every family on the planet. And believe it or not, it's the amount that our largest corporations and wealthiest individuals evade each year in taxes.

This should be a no-brainer. To massively boost our public finances in a time of painful cuts and debt, all we need to do is ensure that everyone pays the taxes they're supposed to. But big US corporations especially are fiercely lobbying to protect their corrupt practices. A massive public campaign will help identify and hold accountable the two leaders - President Obama and Prime Minister Harper, who are considering siding with corruption over this gigantic step forward for the planet. For the sake of almost every issue we care about, let's make sure they feel the heat:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/g8_tax_havens_ph3/?tysEsab

Apple, one of the world's wealthiest companies, paid $0 in tax on $78 billion they made in recent years by setting up shell corporations in low-tax countries and posting profits abroad. This kind of global tax evasion gives multinational firms a huge advantage over smaller domestic companies. It's as bad for a healthy market economy as it is for democracy and economic stability.

But in days, governments will consider a plan that would make it harder for companies and individuals to evade taxes by hiding their money offshore and in tax shelters. The plan would require countries to share information to expose where the money is hidden and require "fake" companies to reveal who's really behind them. If talks go well this week, the G8 could agree to the whole thing later this month.

In hard times, when governments everywhere are cutting spending on vital social priorities, it's particularly galling that the wealthiest get a free pass from paying their fair share. (Even more so when the hard times were caused by massive government handouts to bailout banks owned by the same people). Governments are finally getting serious about plugging these holes in our finances, but the US and Canada are falling sway to powerful business lobbies.

A large public petition that's well covered by the media will help highlight which countries are blocking the agreement, and make this a political issue for Obama and Harper to deal with. A powerful call from the world's people to choose to give a massive boost to our planet instead of preserving corrupt loopholes will also help these leaders to find their consciences and good sense. We can't let the lobbyists win this one in the shadows, let's bring the spotlight of public attention to this massive decision for our planet:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/g8_tax_havens_ph3/?tysEsab

Every week, our community strives in and often wins fights for human rights, democracy, conservation and more. But some decisions have the power to affect thousands of causes at once, often preventing many problems from ever happening. $1 trillion per year in public funding would make a massive difference in the lives of children who could go to school, lives that could be saved, peace that could be built, habitats that could be protected, and so much more. For the sake of all these future struggles that we might not need to fight, let's win this one.

With hope,

Alex, Jeremy, Christoph, Marie, Ian, David, Paul, Ricken and the whole Avaaz team

Anonymous has obtained some documents that "they" do not want you to see, and much to "their" chagrin, we have found them, and are giving them to you.
These documents prove that the NSA is spying on you, and not just Americans.  They are spying on the citizens of over 35 different countries.
These documents contain information on the companies involved in GiG, and Prism.
Whats GiG you might ask? well...

The GIG will enable the secure, agile, robust, dependable, interoperable data sharing environment for the Department where warfighter, business, and intelligence users share knowledge on  a global network that facilitates information superiority, accelerates  decision-making, effective operations, and Net-Centric transformation.

Like we said, this is happening in over 35 countries, and done in cooperation with private businesses, and intelligence partners world wide.
We bring this to you, So that you know just how little rights you have.  Your privacy and freedoms are slowly being taken from you, in closed door meetings, in laws buried in
bills, and by people who are supposed to be protecting you.

Download these documents, share them, mirror them, don't allow them to make them disappear.  Spread them wide and far.  Let these people know, that we will not be silenced, that we will not be taken advantage of, and that we are not happy about this unwarranted, unnecessary, unethical spying of our private lives, for the monetary gain of the 1%.

#5 Re: Offtopic » Opera 12.14 anyone know where I can get it? » 2013-06-06 22:25:07

Thanks oliver.

I found it on a couple of sites, & supposedly for Arch but it wouldn't install. I've now looked at 12.15 11.6 & the opera-next from AUR. All of them have Google built in (on my system anyway).

So I've dumped Opera & will see if there is any other browser that might take the place of Firefox.

Has anyone had any experience with Opera of late?

I installed it yesterday & could see that it would get around a couple of things that have been troubling me with Firefox (memory leak & display problems) for a looong time.

BUT.

The problem I've discovered is that for some users of 12.14 & 12.15 you can't change the search engine from Google. You can delete Google in the preferences & make another search engine the default. Next time you start Opera Google is sitting up their smiling at you as the default again.

This was my experience with 12.15. Apparently 12.14 was better. I haven't been able to find a 12.14 that I can install.

LiveCode can make system independent code for: iOS, Android, OS/X, Linux, Windows, Server. Has great tutorials, the LiveCode team have a really good attitude too.

I installed it on my Manjaro 64bit system & it works fine. The only thing that irritates me is not being able to adjust the size of the development environment's font.

LiveCode is the first development software I've seen that is somewhat similar to CanDo, which was brilliant software that ran on the Amiga (only).

After Commodore slowly strangled the Amiga I went to Windows (was horrified!) & went & bought VB5 when it came out. Looking for a CanDo replacement. VB was so horrible I gave the software & the ~8" thick of manuals away & have done next to no programming since (beyond some scripting in DOS & a tiny bit in bash, which I have rarely had the desire to want to put the effort in to learn).

Maybe I'll do some work with LiveCode. The tiny fonts in the interface (24" 1920x1200 res) may drive me away. We'll see...

You have to download it from their site:

Dear friends,

Our continent is bleeding at the hands of organized criminals and drug traffickers, destroying thousands of lives every year. All because the US has forced Latin American governments to carry out failed drug policies that only reward the criminal gangs behind the drug trade.

Now, for the first time in history, Latin American leaders are pushing for a new approach that could finally deliver results. In 24 hours, Guatemala will bring together the Heads of State of the region to push for a new proposal that gives countries freedom to buck the failed doctrine and adopt drug policies like those that have worked successfully in Europe.

It’s urgent -- high level officials have told us that for the leaders to stand up to the US, they need to see a groundswell of public support in the next few hours to change the failed status quo. Click below to sign the urgent petition and share with everyone -- when we reach 100,000 our voices will be personally delivered to the Guatemalan commission that is leading the summit. Join in:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/for_the_first_t … a/?tysEsab

For decades we have seen governments ignore all the experts’ advice and all the scientific evidence that has proven the failure of the War on Drugs. They have feared voters will throw them out of office if they support alternative approaches, as they will appear “weak on crime”. Now, for the first time, science and politics have a chance to walk together and help shut the door on an age of suffering. The Organization of American States (OAS) is the first international organization that that has laid out real alternatives like supporting new, peaceful, effective approaches in each country instead of using international law to repress innovation. And, for the first time a group of Heads of State want to act on that expert advice.

Momentum for change is building and now is the time to act: Guatemala, Colombia and other countries in the region want reform; and opinion polls show that citizens know the current approach is a catastrophe. Uruguay is developing a smart plan to regulate cannabis and here at home, two states have already voted to legalize and regulate it. And while countries that have experimented with regulation-based policies have seen significant reductions in drug-related crime, addiction and deaths, the lobbies that have fiercely defended the status quo, including military, law enforcement, and prison departments whose budgets are at stake, are losing ground in the debate.

From the streets of Chicago to the streets of Bogota, families across our region are scarred by the wounds of failure, and this is our chance to try success! The Guatemalan President wants to get all the American states to agree to experimentation this week, and those at the negotiating table have told us if we come out in force to say yes to change, we can push back on stalling from fearful countries.

Let’s ensure our continent, that has suffered most deeply, leads the world to review and reform failed international drug laws. We have just hours before the meeting -- sign now and share with everyone -- let’s help our leaders take this crucial step to save lives and restore hope:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/for_the_first_t … a/?tysEsab

When politicians take a stand against failed orthodoxies in the face of political risk, as Guatemalan leaders are doing now, and the people don’t rally behind them, they go down in flames. But when mass movements rise up to support them, that’s how history gets made. Let’s make history in Guatemala next week.

With hope and determination,

Pedro, Maria Paz, Alice, Ricken, Laura, Bissan and the whole Avaaz team

Following is post from mips on the Manjaro forum, followed by my reply. There are a lot of people down on Canonical/Ubuntu/Shuttleworth. I think that they need to broaden their vision.

from mips:

Why do you say that?

Ubuntu did more for linux than anyone else out there. If it wasn't for ubuntu then then things would still be a lot more backwards today and you would be tapping out crap in the command line right now.

WTF is with all this hate and elitism? I can understand why people hate linux, it's trolls.

Maybe I should just start using windows again and ignore this little linux bubble because the people are not nice, they can be the biggest bunch of c*nts you would wish not to come across.

Some people will bitch about anything mips.

Not all Linux users are immature & still playing the mine's bigger than yours games. Though, unfortunately some never do grow out of it.

I thought that Mark Shuttleworth in closing the Bug #1. was just being honest about the situation. He planed, created, funded (initial $10 million) Canonical/Ubuntu, & has worked his but off for open-source software & to try & get Canonical to become self sustaining financially.

He has made the most popular (when you include the Mint & such) Linux distro, & did it in no time flat. He made Linux known to an enormous number of people. Converted a lot of people to Linux by creating the easiest to use distro, (Mint would be my recommendation these days though). He has negotiated with the more big wigs in the IT industry than we'll ever know about, in his efforts to generate more interest & to open more doors for Linux.

As mips stated previously, if not for Mark Shuttleworth, the world of Linux wouldn't be anywhere near as good as it is these days.

Dear friends,

One of the most powerful men in Iceland is about to launch a hunting expedition to kill over 150 endangered fin whales in brazen disregard for international law. But his plan has a major weak link, and the Dutch government could step in to save the day, winning a big victory for endangered species everywhere.

70 year-old Kristjan Loftsson’s self-funded whale hunts and outlandish comments -- he claims whales “are just another fish” -- have made him one of the whale’s worst enemies. But standing between him and his customers in Japan is the Dutch government who can stop his whale meat transiting through the port of Rotterdam. If we call on the Dutch to live up to their environmentally conscious image, they could become Whale Heroes and send the whalers back to the drawing board.

We have just over a week before the whalers leave Reykjavik -- let's make sure Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte pledges to uphold the ban on trading endangered whales and keep Loftsson out. Sign the petition now and send this to everyone who loves whales! When we reach one million signers, we’ll create a massive stunt of fake beached whales on the Rotterdam waterfront that they won’t be able to turn a blind eye to.

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_the_whale_hunt_b/?tysEsab

Fin whales are magical creatures. They're the second longest animal in the world (more than 8-stories tall!) and move through the water like lightning. Their incredible combination of sleek, elegant power and speed earned them the nickname "greyhound of the sea". Just one fin whale can weigh up to 70,000 kgs! And they're endangered -- only about 118,000 are thought to be left in the wild, and annual hunts are threatening their survival.

Hunting fin whales is illegal under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and the International Whaling Commission, which has helped fin whales come back from the brink of extinction. But not everyone follows the rules. One Icelandic businessman with a massive shipping empire, Kristjan Loftsson, has brazenly been selling the meat to Japan and profiting from the whaling ban other countries follow.

Stopping the transit in Rotterdam, Europe’s biggest port, would set a precedent that would make it very difficult for Loftsson to ship his meat profitably through any port in Europe. Hamburg and Finish ports have already shunned the whale trade, and stopping it in Rotterdam could be the final step. A massive public outcry globally and in the Netherlands can help tip the balance -- sign now and say no to the slaughter of endangered whales:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_the_whale_hunt_b/?tysEsab

Avaaz members have achieved tremendous things working together, from opposing the ivory trade to winning a ban on pesticides that were killing record numbers of bees. In 2010, Avaaz members were central to keeping the international moratorium on commercial whaling in tact -- let’s stop this horrific hunt now and keep marching toward a more humane world.

With hope,

Oliver, Pascal, Alaphia, Emily, Alice, David, Ricken and the Avaaz team

#15 Offtopic » Guantanamo - help influence the decision to shut it down: » 2013-05-23 20:51:56

Dear friends,

In 24 hours, President Obama could finally move to close Guantanamo -- the most notorious prison camp on earth.

With inmates on a 100-day hunger strike and the UN denouncing their force feeding as torture, Obama has been pushed to respond with a major speech about the prison. If enough of us demand a plan -- he could free the prisoners already cleared for release, and appoint a White House official with one mission: close Guantanamo down!

We're at a tipping point. Sign up to demand Obama close this shameful gulag down, and share the shocking facts below so others join this urgent call:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/obama_shut_down … 4/?tysEsab

The facts speak for themselves:
Detainees in Guantanamo now: 166
Detainees facing active charges: 6
Detainees cleared for immediate release, but stuck in the camp: 86
Guantanamo inmates on hunger strike: 103
Hunger strikers strapped down and force fed: 30
Prisoners who have died in custody: 9
Children the US has held at Guantanamo: 21
Detainees tried in civilian court: 1
"Unreleasable" detainees who can't be tried for lack of evidence or torture: 50
Prisoners released by the Bush administration: 500+
Prisoners released by the Obama administration: 72
Current annual cost to US taxpayers: $150 million
Days since Obama first pledged to close Gitmo: 1579
Days since first prisoners arrived at Guantanamo: 11 years, 4 months, 11 days

For years, Obama has blamed US Congress for blocking any solution to free these men, transfer them to prisons, or give them a rightful trial. But the power to address this is now in Obama's hands. Congress granted the Defense Department waiver authority that allows prisoners who have been cleared to be transferred out -- Obama himself can free these 86 men. And if he truly wants to shut it down, he can task someone at the White House right now to make it happen.

Sign now to demand Obama announce a plan to close Guantanamo, and share this with everyone -- let's build an urgent global call to end this shame.

http://www.avaaz.org/en/obama_shut_down … 4/?tysEsab

When he first campaigned to become US president, Obama promised to close Guantanamo down. This illegal and repulsive prison has led to far too much suffering and fuelled great divisions and hate in our world. Enough is enough. Let’s get Obama to act and close this painful scar on humanity.

With hope and determination,

Dalia, Joseph, Allison, Bissan, Nick, Alice, Ricken and the whole Avaaz team

Dear friends,

I live and work in the last place on Earth where endangered orangutans, rhinos, elephants, and tigers still roam together -- but it'll be bulldozed to bits unless our President hears our call and steps in to save this unique habitat.

Right now in one of Indonesia's most pristine and untouched forests, a local Governor wants to let mining and palm oil companies move in to decimate areas the size of a million football fields! And the national Forestry Ministry looks like it might let him unless the President steps in to reject this orangutan-killing plan.

We know the President wants to be seen as a keen conservationist, but we need to tell him his green reputation and possible future UN aspirations are on the line to ensure he does the right thing. We need to act fast -- sign the urgent petition and tell everyone about this mortal threat to our majestic forest. If a million people sign in the next 3 days, I'll ensure the President hears us:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_plan_to_kil … ns_cb2?tta

I know these forests well -- I've been working as a conservation manager here since 2007, and received the Future for Nature Award 2013 for my work protecting large mammals in Sumatra, especially rhinos. This place holds the largest biodiversity in all of the Asia Pacific region, and parts of it are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. But this new mining company-backed plan would lay waste to much of it, and would also threaten local communities with deadly landslides and flash floods! And if their habitat is destroyed it could decimate the last few orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos.

Two years ago, the President set up a national task force on deforestation, and signed a two-year logging moratorium after out of control slash and burn logging landed Indonesia in the global news as one of the top greenhouse gas emitters in the world. Thankfully, reports say the President has agreed to renew the moratorium this week, which has been a life insurance policy for so many critically endangered species. But even with the renewal, the Governor of Aceh could still rezone broad swathes of the rainforest for logging unless the President intervenes. The President has only a year and a half left in office, with some saying he’s hoping to transition into a top job at the United Nations, and we just want him to stick to his word. “Forests are so dear to my heart ... losing our tropical rainforests would constitute the ultimate national, global and planetary disaster,” our president told other world leaders at a recent conference.

Mega-palm oil companies would love nothing more than to rip these trees from the ground, and the East Asia Minerals Corporation, based in Canada, was just found working behind the scenes to push through this plan! Countries like mine have a right to develop, but not at the expense of our priceless natural patrimony, and it should benefit, not harm, Indonesians.

Let’s tell the President there is an easy solution -- step in to stop this forest-killing plan. Sign now and tell everyone -- we don’t have long before the mining company invasion. Then if you’re on Twitter, send our Twitter-loving President a direct message after you sign:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_plan_to_kil … ns_cb2?tta

As an Avaaz member I've seen this community come together to protect forests and critically endangered species, from the Amazon in Ecuador and Brazil to elephants and rhinos threatened by poaching. Now it’s Indonesia’s turn -- join us in saving this magical forest.

With hope,

Rudi Putra in Indonesia, with the whole Avaaz team

#21 Re: Offtopic » Bye, Bye, Bees: » 2013-05-01 18:06:05

Dear amazing Avaaz community,

We did it -- Europe just banned bee-killing pesticides!! Mega-corporations like Bayer threw everything they had at this, but people-power, science and good governance came out on top!!

Avaaz bee die in, Germany
Bee "die in" at Bayer's headquarters, Cologne
Vanessa Amaral-Rogers from the specialist conservation organisation Buglife, says:

“It was a close vote, but thanks to a massive mobilisation by Avaaz members, beekeepers, and others, we won! I have no doubt that the floods of phonecalls and emails to ministers, the actions in London, Brussels and Cologne, and the giant petition with 2.6 million signers made this result possible. Thank you Avaaz, and everyone who worked so hard to save bees!”

Bees pollinate two thirds of all our food -- so when scientists noticed that silently, they were dying at a terrifying rate, Avaaz swung in to action, and we kept on swinging until we won. This week’s victory is the result of two years of flooding ministers with messages, organizing media-grabbing protests with beekeepers, funding opinion polls and much, much more. Here’s how we did it, together:

Keeping France strong. In January 2011, 1 million people sign our call to France to uphold its ban on deadly neonicotinoid pesticides. Avaaz members and beekeepers meet the French agriculture minister and fill the airwaves, pressing him to face down fierce industry lobbying and keep the ban, sending a strong signal to other European countries.

    Bernie in Brussels
Bernie, the huge inflatable bee, helps deliver our 2.6m strong petition to Brussels
Tackling industry head on. Bayer has faced Avaaz and allies protesting at its last three annual meetings. The pesticide giant's managers and investors are welcomed by beekeepers, loud buzzing, and massive banners with our 1 million plus call on them to suspend use of neonicotinoids until scientists reviewed their effect on bees. Avaaz even makes a presentation inside the meeting, but Bayer says 'no'.

Making the science count. In January the European Food Safety Agency finds that three pesticides pose unacceptable risks to bees, and we jump in to ensure Europe's politicians respond to their scientific experts. Our petition quickly grows to 2 million signatures. After many talks with EU decision-makers, Avaaz delivers our call right to the EU HQ in Brussels. Later that same day, the Commission proposes a two-year ban!

    March of beekeepers
Beekeepers help deliver our massive petition to Downing Street
Seizing our chance. The battle to save the bees heats up in February and March. Across the EU, Avaaz members are ready to respond as all 27 EU countries decide whether to welcome or block the proposal. When farming giants UK and Germany say they won't vote yes, Avaaz publishes public opinion polls showing huge majorities of Brits and Germans in favour of the ban. Avaaz members also send almost half a million emails to EU Agriculture Ministers. Apparently afraid of dealing with citizens rather than industry lobbyists, UK minister Owen Paterson complains of a “cyber-attack”, which journalists turn into a story in our favour! And then comes Bernie -- our 6 metre bee in Brussels -- a powerful visual way to deliver our petition as negotiations enter the final stages. Journalists flock to Bernie, and we hear we've helped get the Spanish ministry to look harder at the science and shift position . But we didn't get the majority we needed to pass the ban.

    Bernie in The Independent
Bernie the bee featured in The Independent
Turning the red light green. In April the bee-saving proposal is sent to an Appeals Committee, giving us a glimmer of hope if we can switch a few more countries' positions. In the final sprint, Avaaz teams up with groups including Environmental Justice Foundation, Friends of the Earth and Pesticides Action Network, plus beekeepers and famous bee-loving fashion designers to organise an action outside the UK Parliament. In Germany, beekeepers launch their own Avaaz petition to their government, signed by over 150,000 Germans in just two days and delivered in Cologne soon after. More phone calls rain down on ministries in different capitals as Avaaz responds to a last-minute wrecking amendment by Hungary, and positions Bernie the bee again in Brussels. Pesticide companies buy adverts in the airport to catch arriving officials, and take to the airwaves suggesting other measures such as planting wild flowers. But their slick messaging machine is ignored, first Bulgaria then -- the big prize -- Germany switch their stances and this week we win, with over half of EU countries voting for the ban!

It’s been a long haul, to get this win, and it wouldn't have been possible without scientists, specialists, sympathetic officials, beekeepers and our campaign partners. We can be proud of what we've helped to accomplish together.

One strong bees advocate, Paul de Zylva, head of the Pesticides and Pollinators Unit at Friends of the Earth said:

"Thanks to millions of Avaaz members who mobilised online and in the streets. Without a doubt Avaaz's massive petition and creative campaigning helped push this over the edge, complementing our work and that of other NGOs."

It's time to celebrate this breathing space for one of the earth's most precious and important creatures. But the EU ban is only in place for 2 years pending further review. And around the world bees continue to die from the pesticides which weaken and confuse them, as well as from loss of habitat as we plough up and build over the countryside. In Europe and across the world there's lots of work to do to ensure sound science guides our farming and environmental policies. And we're just the community for the job. smile

With hope and happiness,

Ricken, Iain, Joseph, Emily, Alex, Michelle, Aldine, Julien, Anne, Christoph and the rest of the Avaaz team

Why oh why do they call it qBittorrent; have the installed file called qbittorrent & then set the class as Qbittorrent!?

I'm currently in Win7 (been playing LotRO), so I can't test it out yet, but I've learned in the past that the class name has to be accurate (of course)...

Thanks again, I am hopeful. smile

I'm trying to autostart qbittorrent on desktop 6, when Openbox starts up, but what I put in the ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml file is having no effect. I've tried using both qbittorrent & qBittorrent as the class name.

Here is what I'm using in ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml

    <application class="qBittorrent">
      <desktop>6</desktop>
      <maximized>yes</maximized>
    </application>

I tried running the following command in case qbittorrent is using a different class name:

obxprop | grep "^_OB_APP"

All it returns is the following error:

Unable to find window with the requested ID

So I don't know why that command no longer works?

I'm calling qbittorrent in the ~/.config/openbox/autostart file with the usual style of command qbittorrent & this results in the app' opening up on desktop 1.

You may have noticed that I don't want it to open up on desktop 1.  :'(

Any ideas?

Dear Avaazers,

It’s unbelievable, but Monsanto and Co. are at it again. These profit-hungry biotech companies have found a way to exclusively ‘own’ something that freely belongs to us all -- our food! They’re trying to patent away our everyday vegetables and fruits like cucumber, broccoli and melons, forcing growers to pay them and risk being sued if they don’t.

But we can stop them from buying up Mother Earth. Companies like Monsanto have found loopholes in European law to get away with this, so we just need to close them shut before they set a dangerous global precedent. And to do that, we need key countries like Germany, France and the Netherlands -- where opposition is already growing -- to call for a vote to stop Monsanto’s plans. The Avaaz community has shifted governments before, and we can do it again.

Many farmers and politicians are already against this -- we just need to bring in people power to pressure these countries to keep Monsanto’s hands off our food. Sign now and share with everyone to help build the biggest food defense call ever:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/monsanto_vs_mot … b/?tysEsab

Once a patent exists in one country, trade agreements and negotiations often push other countries to honour it as well. That's why these food patents change everything about how our food chain works: for thousands of years, farmers could choose which seeds they’d use without worrying about getting sued for violating intellectual property rights. But now, companies launch expensive legal campaigns to buy patents on conventional plants and force farmers to pay exorbitant royalty fees. Monsanto and Co. claim that patents drive innovation -- but in fact they create a corporate monopoly of our food.

But luckily, the European Patent Office is controlled by 38 member states who, with one vote, can end dangerous patents on food that is bred using conventional methods. Even the European Parliament has issued a statement objecting to these kinds of destructive patents. Now, a massive wave of public outcry could push them to ban the patenting of our everyday food for good.

The situation is dire already -- Monsanto alone owns 36% of all tomato, 32% of sweet pepper and 49% of cauliflower varieties registered in the EU. With a simple regulatory change, we could protect our food, our farmers and our planet from corporate control -- and it's up to us to make it happen:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/monsanto_vs_mot … b/?tysEsab

The Avaaz community has never been afraid to stand up to corporate capture of our institutions, from pushing back the Rupert Murdoch mafia, to helping ensure that telecoms keep their hands off our Internet. Now it’s time to defend our food supply from this corporate takeover.

With hope and determination,

Jeremy, Michelle, Oli, Dalia, Pascal, Ricken, Diego and the whole Avaaz team

#29 Offtopic » Thousands Maasai families kicked off their land for wealthy shooters: » 2013-04-05 16:47:24

Dear friends,

We are elders of the Maasai from Tanzania, one of Africa’s oldest tribes. The government has just announced that it plans to kick thousands of our families off our lands so that wealthy tourists can use them to shoot lions and leopards. The evictions are to begin immediately.

Last year, when word first leaked about this plan, almost one million Avaaz members rallied to our aid. Your attention and the storm it created forced the government to deny the plan, and set them back months. But the President has waited for international attention to die down, and now he’s revived his plan to take our land. We need your help again, urgently.

President Kikwete may not care about us, but he has shown he’ll respond to global media and public pressure -- to all of you! We may only have hours. Please stand with us to protect our land, our people and our world’s most majestic animals, and tell everyone before it is too late. This is our last hope:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_the_ … c/?tysEsab

Our people have lived off the land in Tanzania and Kenya for centuries. Our communities respect our fellow animals and protect and preserve the delicate ecosystem. But the government has for years sought to profit by giving rich princes and kings from the Middle East access to our land to kill. In 2009, when they tried to clear our land to make way for these hunting sprees, we resisted, and hundreds of us were arrested and beaten. Last year, rich princes shot at birds in trees from helicopters. This killing goes against everything in our culture.

Now the government has announced it will clear a huge swath of our land to make way for what it claims will be a wildlife corridor, but many suspect it’s just a ruse to give a foreign hunting corporation and the rich tourists it caters to easier access to shoot at majestic animals. The government claims this new arrangement is some sort of accommodation, but its effect on our people’s way of life will be disastrous. There are thousands of us who could have our lives uprooted, losing our homes, the land on which our animals graze, or both.

President Kikwete knows this deal would be controversial with Tanzania’s tourists - a critical source of national income - and does not want a big PR disaster. If we can urgently generate even more global outrage than we did before, and get the media writing about it, we know it can make him think twice. Stand with us now to call on Kikwete to stop the sell off:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_the_ … c/?tysEsab

This land grab could spell the end for the Maasai in this part of Tanzania, and many of our community have said they would rather die than be forced from their homes. On behalf of our people and the animals who graze in these lands, please stand with us to change the mind of our President.

With hope and determination,

The Maasai elders of Ngorongoro District

Dear friends,

It's hard to believe, but a 15-year-old rape survivor in the Maldives has been sentenced to be whipped 100 times in public! Let's put an end to this lunacy by hitting the government where it hurts: their tourism industry.

The girl says she was raped by her stepfather and others for years and her stepfather is accused of murdering the baby she bore. Now the court says she must be flogged for “sex outside marriage”. President Waheed of the Maldives is already feeling global pressure on this, but we can force him to save this girl and change the law to spare other victims this cruel fate. This is how we can end the War on Women – by standing up every time an outrage like this happens.

Tourism is the big earner for the Maldives elite, including government ministers. Let's build a million-strong petition to President Waheed this week, then threaten the islands' reputation through hard-hitting ads in travel magazines and online until he steps in to save her and abolish this outrageous law. Sign now and forward this email now to get us to a million:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/maldives_global/?tysEsab

The Maldives is a paradise for tourists. But for women there, it can be hell.Under harsh interpretations of sharia law, women and children are routinely punished with flogging and house arrest if found guilty of extramarital sex or adultery. It's nearly always the women who get punished, not the perpetrators. A staggering one in three women between ages 15 and 49 have suffered physical or sexual abuse -- yet zero rapists were convicted in the past three years.

Winning this battle can help women everywhere, as the Maldives government is right now running for a top UN human rights position - on a platform of women's rights! Global outrage has already forced President Waheed to appeal the sentence in the 15-year-old's case. But that's not enough. Extremists inside the country will force him to abandon further reforms if international attention fades. Let’s tell the Maldives that it stands to lose its reputation as a romantic tourist hot spot unless it changes its attitudes to and laws about women.

If enough of us raise our voices, we can get President Waheed and his MPs to face down the extremists. The president is already on the back foot over this shameful, tragic story - let's seize this moment to prevent more horrifying injustices against girls and women. Sign the petition, then send this email widely:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/maldives_global/?tysEsab

Avaaz members have fought many battles in the global war on women. In Afghanistan, we helped protect a young woman who bravely spoke out about her horrific rape; in Honduras, we fought alongside local women against a law that would jail women using the morning-after pill. Let's now protect the women of the Maldives.

With hope and determination,

Jeremy, Mary, Nick, Alex, Ricken, Laura, Michelle and the whole Avaaz team

Dear friends,

In just hours, the European Union will vote on whether to ban toxic pesticides that are killing bees around the world and threatening our food supply. The big corporations profiting from this vile stuff are lobbying furiously to defeat the ban and we've just heard that key governments are about to cave -- unless they feel the sting of public opinion!

Bees are disappearing around the world at alarming rates. Because bees pollinate our crops, experts are warning that these mass deaths pose a catastrophic threat to our food supply. Thankfully, numerous studies have now identified the likely culprit: a certain class of noxious pesticides. An official EU report found that banning them could solve the problem, but pesticide giant Bayer is trying to convince our leaders to ignore the science to protect their profits.

Over 2.5 million of us have signed the petition that made this vote possible -- and now it's time to tell EU decision-makers that they must side with science to save the bees this week. Let’s flood the inboxes of key EU Agriculture Ministers, drown out the corporate lobby, and make sure Europe saves the bees and our food -- click below to send a message then share this urgent campaign with your friends:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/bye_bye_bees_global/?tysEsab

Bees don't just make honey, they are vital to life on earth, every year pollinating 90% of plants and crops and helping to generate an estimated $40bn value and over one-third of the food supply in many countries. Without immediate action to save bees, many of our favourite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish from our shelves.

Last month the European Food Safety Authority gave the most compelling evidence yet that toxic chemicals called neonicotinoid pesticides could be responsible for the bee deaths. Italy has banned some uses of these bee-killing pesticides and has already seen it's bee populations come back, but Bayer and Sygenta are lobbying to prevent a Euro-wide ban, for fears it would harm their global business. It seems they're close to having the support of the UK, Spain, and Germany, who want to protect their biggest chemical corporations.

Now the issue is coming to a boil. Just weeks ago, Avaaz delivered a petition signed by over 2.5 million of us to the European Commission, who proposed a ban days later. EU parliamentarians are stepping up their pressure and several other European governments have announced plans to push ahead with new legislation to ban the deadly pesticides on their own. So we have the power to win this, but we need one final push to overcome the pesticide lobby. Send a message telling EU governments to support the ban now and then share with others:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/bye_bye_bees_global/?tysEsab

Our world is beset with threats to what makes it habitable, and to what fills it with wonder. The Avaaz community comes together to defend both -- large or small. Whether winning a battle to keep the International Whaling Commission from sanctioning the murder of these giants, or saving bees, the tiny creatures upon which so much depends, we will come together and stand up for the world we all want.

With hope,

Iain, Marie, Pascal, Emma, Ricken, Alaphia, and the Avaaz team

#42 Re: Arch Discussions » Getting blocked over at the Arch forums » 2013-03-13 18:27:09

I received an email from Allan last night. He said he can see no reason why I would be blocked over at Arch. So it would seem that I've done something strange on my machine at some point in time & blocked myself. <doh!>

I'll delve into that one again when I'm feeling energetic.

Allan also mentioned as an aside that he is not the Manjaro user called Loonix.

For those that don't know, Loonix caused a bit of a stir a while back in the Manjaro forum. I'm sure that at least Carl will be happy to hear this. smile

I'm grateful that Allan contacted me re. these things - now we can put them (& associated stuff) to bed.

#43 Re: Manjaro(Bang) » Archbang vs Manjaro/Openbox, lets compare choices and experiences » 2013-03-13 06:54:07

I guess my Manjaro experience is fairly unique, as I just made Manjaro how I'd make any Arch install - which is of course just the way I personally like it to be. smile

I initially installed the Manjaro Gnome/Cinnamon system (had never seen Cinnamon) then deleted Gnome/Cinnamon & other stuff & installed Openbox, Worker & the other apps that I like to use. Played around with it a little & have a very slightly different system than I've been using for years, which I prefer.

I've never seen any of the various pacman GUI related apps. I just use allservers.sh when I upgrade & these days a yaourt alias when I install a package (from the stable repo or from AUR).

The QT thing caused me to loose a couple of AUR packages that I very rarely use anyway. So I don't mind waiting until the maintainers get there act together.

My 4 months of Manjaro usage has basically been very easy going. I have the advantage of not using the Manjaro package management apps. They are still in heavy development (some have become redundant & been replaced by new more powerful tools).

I think that using these apps is the most likely place for a Manjaro user to find trouble in these early days of the distro. Which is a bit unfortunate for the new(ish) Linux users that have been attracted to Manjaro, as they often don't understand what a rolling release system is, to start with, or that using a distro requires a person to do a little searching & reading. Coming from Windows they are all of a sudden thrown into a community that actually helps each other out of the goodness of their hearts!

You can imagine, they are often quite disorientated. lol Some will never be the same! big_smile

#46 Re: Offtopic » Allan MCRAE attacking Manjaroo january 2013 » 2013-03-11 16:59:19

My understanding is that the Arch dev's make Arch what it is by their input. The more input you have (meaning the harder you work for the Arch community) as a dev, the more influence you have on what Arch is, does & its attitude (from the top).

Allan puts in an enormous amount of excellent work. Therefore he has a lot of influence. As I've stated here before I think, using different words: - some people when they put a lot of time into something, don't like seeing other people using their work in unintended ways.

Their work is provided for their intended audience which is often under their control to a certain extent.

The Arch attitude is that if you don't like how we do things here, then go somewhere else.

Some would prefer that when you go you don't take any of Arch with you. smile

#49 Re: Arch Discussions » Getting blocked over at the Arch forums » 2013-03-10 05:22:59

It recently occurred to me that since Arch has gone systemd, the importance of doing a Beginners' Guide install has been diminished quite a bit.

I wonder if the Beginners' Guide will eventually include a systemd Units tutorial?

@pablokal: I saw your reply last night but was too tired to answer at the time, thought I'd leave it until the morning. Anyway for whatever reason the post has been deleted, which is of course not a problem at this end.

I'll just say that I'm sorry to hear of your trauma all those years ago, & am grateful that you didn't get brain damage or damage your energy systems due to it. It sounded like you recovered from it very well, which is the only way to go. smile

#52 Re: Offtopic » New phone » 2013-03-08 17:02:11

~30 years ago I suffered a head injury (amongst other bits) that meant I could no longer be a farmer/outdoor worker. Suffering from chronic fatigue & a severely disrupted sleeping pattern on top of the chronic fatigue (great combo) my brain is always tired, often too tired to be fit for human verbal interactions.

BUT, my typing skills use different parts of the brain & allow me to be able to communicate much better using the written word than I now can verbally (even when at my best). It also doesn't matter how slow my mental computer is going at the time as when typing you prepare what you have to say & then send it. smile

I like to solve problems, I like to do things with my hands. So computers back in the 2nd half of the 1980's became my escape from feeling like a bucket of mud all the time. Focus out & forget about in.

Also, why computers - is that I can to a very large extent control what content on the net that I'm exposed to, as opposed to the mindless rubbish that most of what comes out of the commercial media markets consists of.

#53 Re: Offtopic » New phone » 2013-03-08 14:41:21

I don't like having my thought processes (for all that they're worth these days!) interrupted. I don't listen to the radio, we have never had TV in this house in 23+ years that we have lived here. Previous to that when I was a farmer for ~4 years, I never had a TV (people used to offer to give me spare TV's that they had) & people couldn't understand why I didn't want one! lol

I'm repelled by the bullshit that comes out of the mouths of announcers everywhere. Let alone all of the other incredibly intense commercial bullshit. The perennial spin that comes from the news & other associated social commentary desks is just plain brain washing = get scared, stay lost, lonely & confused & buy more 'cause it will make you feel better & you'll fit in with everyone else...

Back to phones: Don't you love it when you are having a conversation with someone & their phone rings & they sit there, or walk away & have a conversation with someone else?

The attention span of the mobile phone generations (in combination with the effects of TV) must be measured in milliseconds. Fancy being a school teacher!

/bitch smile

#54 Re: Offtopic » New phone » 2013-03-07 23:35:25

I've never had a mobile phone account. I've had two smart phones, (one was a gift from an old customer who had to upgrade from his O2xda2) the other is an iPhone, which I carry around & use as an iPod (for contacts, notes & audio books) my wife gave it to me when she upgraded her iPhone.

I don't want a phone. Rarely use one at home & next to never need to use one when I'm out. I can see that there are benefits if you have a car problem & such. Though where I live & a lot of the places I travel through, there is no mobile coverage anyway!

When the coverage improves I'll probably go for a <$10/month plan, I suppose.

#55 Re: Offtopic » PC-BSD's first Rolling Release ISO's now available: » 2013-03-03 23:52:51

I don't use the Manjaro Openbox spin (or synapse).

It is very well put together, but compared to my bare bones Ob setup, Manjaro's is like a DE environment. Carl put a lot of work into it to get it there, it is particularly good for new users who are still finding out about how you can so easily customise Arch based systems. Though of course there are old hands that like what Carl has done with Ob too.

#56 Re: Offtopic » PC-BSD's first Rolling Release ISO's now available: » 2013-03-01 21:08:37

It is great that there is both the ArchBSD project & PC-BSD now going rolling release. If the systemd path ends up taking Linux into a place that we really don't like we will have at least PC-BSD where we can go that will be systemd free & rolling release - being the way that so many of us like to roll. smile

I left Arch & went to PC-BSD after learning enough about systemd to not like the possible futures that could come from it. The alternative builds by smil3y & such won't be around for the long run. Perhaps Gentoo & others will manage to build up the support to have a viable long term openrc init alternative system though it will only get tougher as time goes by.

With that said, I ended up going to Manjaro (pure systemd!!!) because the one thing that I really missed in PC-BSD was the pacman rolling release system & Manjaro attracted me due to the atmosphere in their forum, its nice (like here), & I can help out a bit over there as there are a lot of newish Linux users. If they were intermediate -> advanced users I wouldn't have much to offer. I won't go back to straight Arch as they are too right wing over there for me.

I certainly won't be surprised if as time goes by & PC-BSD get their rolling release system polished up that I end up migrating. I still have PC-BSD on my 2nd machine but rarely use it these days. There is a script coming out shortly that will allow you to upgrade your PC-BSD system to the new rolling release version. I'll let them sort the bugs on that one & give it a go, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

#57 Re: Arch Discussions » Getting blocked over at the Arch forums » 2013-03-01 06:24:10

I just booted up a Sabayon Live disk & could use the new account that I made the other day. I logged in & out a few times with no trouble. I can't use my original account though. I had a look at the simple profile that a non-owner of an account can see & it doesn't say I've been banned.

When I feel motivated to I'll email Misfit138, as over the years (not for some time now though) we had some email communication - not just relating to computer shit. He's a pretty cool frude in my book. smile

@Sheng-Chieh: Thanks for the heads up on that one I'll take note of it.

Dear friends at Avaaz,

Across Africa, elephants are being slaughtered by poachers in record numbers -- and their tusks hacked off with chainsaws -- to make luxury items, statues and trinkets in Asia. But in days, Thailand will host a key global summit on illegal trade in endangered species, giving us a rare chance to stop this futile massacre.

Thailand is the world’s largest unregulated ivory market and a top driver of the illegal trade. They’ve been in the hot seat for years, yet so far little has been done to clamp down on their role in the elephant attack. But Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has just announced that she is considering a full ivory ban. That's why we started a global petition on the Avaaz site, to give this campaign the last push it needs to win.

This is the best chance we’ve had in years to have a meaningful victory for Africa’s elephants -- we just need to put people power behind it. Join me now to stop the bloody ivory trade. Sign the urgent petition and share it with everyone:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_elephants/?tysEsab

It’s heartbreaking to hear conservationists use the term ‘killing frenzy’ to describe the scale of elephant poaching right now -- it’s the worst it's been in over 2 decades. Exploiting a legal loophole that allows the sale of ivory from Thailand’s domestic elephants, criminals smuggle in illegally obtained African ivory, mix it in with domestic sources so no one can tell them apart, then get away with selling it on the open market.

But there is serious pressure on Thailand to act, before the 10-day UN summit on endangered species begins in Bangkok. Now is the time for us to act to shut down the Thai Ivory trade and set a ripple effect across Asia, forcing other countries to confront their illegal ivory trade as well.

Join me now to turn up the heat on the Thai government and strike a blow against the ivory trade. Together we can win this. Help me reach 1 million before the meeting with PM Shinawatra in days. Sign and share with friends and family:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_elephants/?tysEsab

Across the world's cultures and throughout our history elephants have been revered in religions and have captured our imagination -- Babar, Dumbo, Ganesh, Airavata, Erawan. That these beautiful and highly intelligent creatures are being annihilated is a tragedy, but today we can right that wrong.

With hope and determination,

Leonardo DiCaprio, with the Avaaz team

It really is well worth appreciating that this may all be somehow due to my system's setup. I don't understand how, but that doesn't mean a great deal.

I'm saying this in an effort to minimise generating any Arch negativity over here, this may very well be a fur ball that I've created on my own system!

Also, I don't know if I'm all that pleased that my earlier post has caused a new thread to be split off, especially with its current topic. I really don't think that it does anything to further positive relations with Arch.

Suppose I'm going to have to ask them.

[edit:]

I had closed my previous successful login, so on attempting to login a 2nd time I am denied as I am with my original Arch account?

I suppose I'll have to try & make a 3rd account & if successful I'll post my question & see what happens.

[edit2:]

Won't accept my 2nd attempt, no email with password.

I may now be considered by their server to be a spammer!

Thanks for the good tip.

I was pretty much always well behaved on the Arch forums, it always seemed to me that being well behaved over there is a requirement. On the Manjaro forum I have been a diffusing element re. anti this or that. Negativity rarely breeds anything but more negativity.

I think that learning from our mistakes & moving on is the way to go. We all make mistakes, the trick is to turn them positive.

I don't seem to be allowed to log in to the Arch forum any more, though my account still exists.

There had been some discussions on the Manjaro forum re. statements made about Manjaro on a certain Arch dev's blog. Also, around the same time there was a highly knowledgeable new user (different user name) who was posting (in a quite aggressive & disrespectful manner) correct statements about errors in the Manjaro core system. We'll never know if they are the same person.

I had some things to say about the attitude of "some" of the dev's, mod's & TU's on the Arch forum. (That "some" I consider to be a noisy minority.) Interestingly the particular dev who owned the blog, was NOT one of the ones who I considered to have a bad attitude!

Anyway, I think that perhaps my IP has been blocked at the Arch forum. I'm not going to bother changing my IP or otherwise mucking about due to this, as I rarely ever go there & I don't have anything to say. I only found out due to wanting to have some minor input in the OpenRC thread over there.

I did turn off all of my Firefox web security settings just to be sure I wasn't blocking myself. & it is also quite possible that I missed something. Though I'm not blocked from any of the other forums that I participate in...

It is quite possible that (due to a misunderstanding of the meaning of my words in forum posts in the Manjaro forum) I have been excommunicated from Arch! lol

ArchBang is Arch that has some customisations. It installs quickly to the point of being a fully fledged Arch system the way that the AB creator(s) want it to be.

Anyone that argues that AB is not Arch is arguing from a philosophical perspective & definitely NOT from a pragmatic point of view.

AB uses the Arch repositories!

So someone having experience with both systems basically means that once upon a time they did the Beginners' Guide install... Beyond that Arch is Arch.

Manjaro doesn't quite fit into the Arch is Arch category due to their stable repo being ~2 weeks older than those of Arch. Though you can use the Manjaro testing repo which is basically that of Arch being no more than 24hours older.

I have my Manjaro system set up the same as my Arch/AB systems were. I use the stable repo as I really have no need to have packages ~2 weeks earlier. So for me the only difference between using Arch/AB is that I don't upgrade my packages quite so often.

I don't think allservers.sh is all that popular over at Manjaro, the users are mostly newish to Linux (that's why the wiki page is so explanatory) & much more GUI oriented than some of us... wink

This won't help you with your problem shengchieh but someone here may find the simple allservers.sh script I wrote of interest & perhaps modify it to be of use here with ArchBang. I wrote a wiki page about the script which also includes the script, here:

The way I see AB is that it provides many users (what percentage I wonder?) the opportunity to use Arch, with its wonderful rolling release (& cutting edge package versions for those that consider that to be important) without them having to go through the Beginners' Guide installation procedure.

(I was one of the others who were already familiar with Arch, who used AB as it can be a quicker way to install Arch, though that really does depend on just how many changes you make to AB to get Arch set up the way you personally like it.)

So making an AUR PKGBUILD that turns a base (Beginners' Guide) Arch install into AB would (imho) loose a great deal of the benefit that the current ArchBang installation brings to the table for many (most?) of its users.

Personally I consider the aforementioned AUR build to be a waste of time. If you can install Arch via the Beginners' Guide & you know how to search & use the Archwiki, then you are well on your way to being able to proceed with creating an Arch installation the way you want it to be (a broad generalisation I know smile ).

The AB backgound image, theme, OBmenu & conky would really be the only things(?) that would need to be available wouldn't they?

Due to spammers even getting through our invite only registration process (which was of course put into place due to them) we changed to a different (all singing & all dancing) forum(+) software which has a LOT more security. faolan did all the work on this.

The problem being that there is now bugger all contributions going on at Spiralinear.org (there wasn't a huge normally anyway) & I for one don't use it any more (even though I started Spiralinear.org, named it & pay for it), as the forum is now (to me anyway) quite ugly & not straight forward re. usage & navigation.

During the move we lost a LOT of links to pages (amongst some other minor problems), one of them being the most popular page/thread of all. It had an enormous amount of links, we lost a good proportion of our non-member viewers due to that.

Thankfully faolan seems to have fixed that link problem. I'm grateful to him for all of the time he has put in to protect us from the evil spammers, but in the end I think that they will probably end up being the cause of a long drawn out death for Spiralinear.org. sad

Manjaro is as Arch as you want it to be. It offers a variety of great Arch based systems that are ready rolled for not necessarily very experienced Linux users, as well as allowing you to roll your own Manjaro using the net install, which comes with X.org & installs the correct drivers for your GPU (choice of proprietary or OS).

Apart from that you can uninstall & install whatever you want to completely change the system to suit yourself. (as I have done)

You can also use the Manjaro testing repos which are basically the Arch stable repos just fractionally delayed.

I use the Manjaro stable repos as I really don't care about being on the sharp edge of cutting these days... wink

For users that want to have an Arch system, but quickly, we certainly have quite a number of choices these days. Which is always a good thing, imho anyway...

#73 Re: Arch Discussions » Better backup plan » 2013-01-08 05:58:47

I like to backup the ~/.mozilla directory because I can just grab the entire ~/.mozilla/firefox/<code>.default contents & move it into the ~/.mozilla/firefox/<different.code>.default directory on another installation (of Linux & FreeBSD at least - I've tested it on them).

Doing so saves me having to reconfigure all of my preferences & is a fantastic time saver when it comes to installing the add-ons - as you don't have to. big_smile I just login to my Xmarks account & continue sharing/synchronising Bookmarks between my system installations.

Some people have said no, you don't do it that way. Well bugger them, it is just too easy & it works VERY reliably.

That little rave was of course inspired by the fact that you aren't backing up .mozilla Mr Green. smile

#74 Re: Announcements » New procedure for new members wanting to register with ArchBang forums » 2013-01-04 07:32:02

Over at Spiralinear.org we'd been running an invite only membership due to spam. Then the spammers managed to get through that, so we've only just changed to new forum software (Vanilla) which apparently has much more powerful anti-spam options.

We'll see how that pans out...
